Sometimes a bit tough to follow, but definitely worth reading. Very interesting information and a good genealogical reference. Would recommend it.

I've bought this book a few times and given all away, so this review is from memory. I've given copies to both Spanish and Ute friends, because it treats both with honesty and leaves readers feeling respectful. I've also given copies to folks interested in anthropology in general because it's such a dang good document. As is clear from the title, the book is about the complex cultural interactions between Spanish colonists and their Ute neighbors, especially focusing on the Spanish side (it also touches on later Anglo arrivals). It sheds light on the necessary self-sufficiency of that hard land, including the Brotherhood (Penetentes) and necessary (but illegal) barter. The author grew up in the middle of this geographic area (a town that was flooded under Navajo Reservoir), and her story is quite full of life. Sometimes too full, as the book enumerates long lists of individual residents (nice to have this documented somewhere, but I skipped it). This book definitely gave me a richer view of the place I now call home. Of course I recommend it.
