Bradley has been involved in many national and international activities related to paleoclimatology, most notably as the current Chair of the Scientific Steering Committee for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program on Past Global Changes (IGBP-PAGES).

Bradley's work indicates that the warming of Earth's climate system in the twentieth century is inexplicable via natural mechanisms.

This introductory textbook is an overview of methodology used to study climatic modes and shifts of the past. Its quaternary focus gives it pertinence to the present, the recent past and the time frame when modern mammals were continuing to evolve, differentiate and sometimes go extinct. As such it puts perspective on both the rhetoric of the current global warming hysteria and the scientific methods which are used for real climate study.

(My copy is a first edition from the 1980s, which explains traditional methods which are the basis for the science itself. I have a copy of the second edition as well, which has more expansion of newer methods and more complex discussion of the old material.)

It is not an in depth study of the equations used for the projective computer climate simulations which seem to be agitating so many politically minded people, but the target reader is a student interested in study of real climate rather than speculation. People who like to speculate about "anthropogenic global warming" should hold in mind the old engineering principle: "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there is".
The new edition is more comprehensive and up-to-date. This is a tour-de-force in the discipline. Indispensible reading for anyone seriously interested in the history of the earth's climate.
