Standard rammed earth construction involves erecting wood forms and compacting the prepared soil into these molds . University of Arizona Press, 1989.

Standard rammed earth construction involves erecting wood forms and compacting the prepared soil into these molds, which are removed after the walls are completed. In the tire method, a row of used automobile tires is simply laid atop the concrete footing, perhaps centered around steel reinforcing bars that extend out of the footing.

Earth is the oldest and most widely used building material in the world today. It's abundant, inexpensive, and energy-efficient. But if you're building with earth, simplicity of material needn't be an excuse for poor planning. Paul Graham McHenry, author of the best-selling Adobe - Build It Yourself, here provides the most complete, accurate, and factual source of technical information on building with earth. Lavishly illustrated with scores of photographs and drawings, Adobe and Rammed Earth Buildings spells out details of: - soil selection- adobe brick manufacturing- adobe brick wall construction- rammed earth wall construction- window and door detailing- earth wall finishes- foundations- floor and roof structures- insulation- mechanical considerations. Whether you're designing a new building or renovating an existing structure, Adobe and Rammed Earth Buildings can show you how to achieve better results.

After reading this book I really want to build one of these houses!

I think this book is a bit dated, which I realize mostly when it discusses 'current' events from the 1980s... but mud and earth change little so the actual building information is helpful to me as a very beginner in earth architecture.
JUST DO IT
Was very informative and thorough on the subject. Not much info on roofs or second story floors, though.

lots of detailed information about adobes. The book is like a course in college.

This book is easy to read and understand when the author explains adobe and rammed earth buildings. The book seems to be a bit more focused on the details of adobe brick making which is great if that is what you want. The rammed earth sections are very informative but lack some of the construction details. I would have liked to have seen more detailed decriptions with better drawings of forms, for example. The author also has several table having containg soil composition that was a bit too technical for practical use. Overall,I believe this book is well worth the money for an introduction to adobe and rammed earth buildings. Additional books would be needed to learn enough to build one yourself though.

This book is full of great information and is well worth purchasing. For the average consumer it is all you will need. However as an engineer, I wish it had more technical information (shear capacity of adobe walls, etc). I've looked for such a book, but I don't think it exists.
1. Don't buy two books by the author. They are the same thing maybe said a different way.
2. After reading a great amount of the latest available research on adobe and rammed earth my take away message was that it isn't worth the bother. A. Earth is not an insulator. A 12 inch thick wall puts a 12 hour phase delay on thermal transfer. A three foot wall is more phase delay. B. Any time the thermal cycles are not optimal then you need a real insulator. Think of a week of really hot or cold weather. Since a real thermal insulator is required anyway why bother with a building material that the inspectors don't like and has a hard time meeting code.
