The second part discusses the microscopic theory of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer. The theory is used to discuss quasi particle tunneling and the Josephson effects from a microscopic point of view. The final part of the book treats nonuniform superconductors using the BogoliubovSHde Gennes approach with which it is possible to extract many important results without invoking Green's function methods. Hawk Flying
This textbook is overall well-written and the authors prefer to present the material through a sequence of equations, saying few words when necessary. This kind of presentation is expected to be heavy for somebody who targets at a qualitative understanding, but it is going to be satisfactory and rewarding for those seeking for a quantitative understanding. Since there are so many equations there in, typos are unavoidable (despite the authors' claim that they went through correction of them) so you are advised to catch paper and pencil and fill in the steps on your own at those points where the authors use words to describe a sequence of calculations (this way you can fully catch the typos). Another possible drawback of the textbook is that, in the third part of the presentation, there are few points which seem to have fallen from the sky ... you are "forced" to believe what they say without further explanations. The five stars go mainly to the fact that their presentation is supported by a lot of quantification ... whereas most textbooks present as few equations as possible.

This book would be suitable for a course in superconductivity aimed at graduate students who have already benefited from a two-semester graduate course in quantum mechanics. Second quantization is used extensively. Nevertheless, the authors often use classical arguments, which makes much of the book accessible to advanced undergraduates. Unlike Schrieffer's Theory Of Superconductivity (Advanced Books Classics), a knowledge of quantum field theory is not required. This book is more mathematically intensive and complete than Fossheim and Sudbo's Superconductivity: Physics and Applications, though also lacking some of the other book's intuitive arguments.

Early on, the authors introduce the concepts of penetration depth and coherence length, requiring little more than a familiarity with Maxwell's Equations on the part of the reader. The authors then go on to an easily understandable development of Ginzberg-Landau theory and state the demarcation between Type I and Type II superconductors in terms of the ratio of the penetration depth to the coherence length. The discussion of BCS theory and electron-phonon interactions is also easy to follow.

This book is really good. Some graduate books skimp on details and assume the reader can derive the necessary equations. This goes into unambiguously clear, explicit detail on how things were derived (without going overboard), explaining all the assumptions made in a highly accessible manner. In short it has rigorous derivations that are explained very clearly, which is what I love.

I would say the reader should look at the topics first to decide how useful it will be to them; but thus far in my graduate career I have found it to be an excellent aid.
