Aptly sporting the name Hart, the author has spent a life stalking deer. The author’s reports of stalking fallow in the English woods are fascinating, and he is illuminating on their habits and group behaviour. This, he remarks, has never excited any serious moral objection, even in our sensitised society, because the need to control deer is accepted.

This is a book for anyone confounded by the skittishness and elusiveness of deer, hunters and wildlife lovers alike. It adds to all the lore about those things that man has been consistently unable to conquer and which thereby command our respect. No wonder trophy deer heads have stared back at us from walls for centuries. They keep us deservedly humble but still in the game.

I really enjoyed this book. The author obviously loves the same areas where he (and I) have gone deer stalking. A good read for anyone who loves to stalk, or who just likes going ot the Highlands.

One item: the author says he went stalking with a rifle that was "on" at 100 yards but a foot low at 200. I have shot high powered rifles all my adult life, and am unfamiliar with any rifle with ballistics like that. Please let me know the calibre so I can be sure not to ever use one in that calibre!
