This is the "Come Down Gently" manual for high voltage spiritual experiences. Kundalini goes by lots of names - Holy Spirit, Chi, Ki, N/um to name a few. If you are interested in these kinds of experiences, or plan on doing spiritual pilgrimages to high voltage people or sites, do yourself a favor and keep this book close. It has excellent recommendations for remaining grounded during the experiences and gives a very comprehensive program for recovery and re-integration if you get blown into dimensions that you did not expect.

I traveled to India this year and was unprepared for the energetic shifts that accompanied the voyage. It took me several weeks to put things back into perspective and this book was a lifesaver in the process. I especially enjoyed the focus on character building that the author describes, based on Sai Baba's teachings. Gently, loving, kind, and insightful - this book has the wisdom you need to navigate the deep waters of high voltage spiritual experiences.

I read the book twice, at both times I was rivetted and could not put the book down. I am a Psychologist who has been on a spiritual path since 42 years, so I understood the problems many people were facing, and was enthralled with the many styles and techniques of treatment that Dr. Gersten used to help alleviate the suffering of his patients. His insights are deep and his understanding of insanity and enlightenment profound not only because of his training and experience, but also because he has personally reached some level of spiritual understanding that sheds so much light on the challenging work of bringing people back from what is often the land of no return. Dr. Gersten tends the garden of our mind with the attentive and loving hand of a master gardener tending flower beds and culling out weeds so that the garden is beautiful.

As a psychologist who has always defined "psychiatrist" as an M.D. who practices psychology without a license, I was taken by surprise by this book. He actually knows the field of psychology and the field of parapsychology too! His underlying attitude is the most surprising, and compelling, part. Although he self-discloses several personal non-ordinary experiences, he's not selling a "spiritual" or "mystical" or "esoteric" worldview, he's just allowing for possibilities commonly associated with those worldviews, respecting people who have had experiences commonly associated with those worldviews, and offering them some very sensible suggestions. As a person, Gersten meets a criterion for maturity that resonates for me -- the ability to live comfortably with the ambiguity that surrounds us [homo sapiens] in our adolescence as a thinking species. This means that he has not collapsed into PREMATURE CERTAINTY about some unverified and currently unverifiable theory or doctrine, as too many people, including scientists and religionists, are wont to do.

This book is one of my favorite post-masters degree books. It really gets in depth about phenomenological experiences and how to work with your clients when they have them. Also gets you to take a hard look at your own belief systems. I highly recommend this book.

This book is great for those who want to understand a more "spiritual" side to mental illness. It was one of the first books I read to help me go down a path of understanding healing in a new way. I think we often times like to slap lables on or illness, give them drugs, and try to forget about them. This book can help you go discover a new way of understanding mental illness.

Print was too small so I put the book down. Can't rate it honestly.
Interesting read. I think that Dr. Gerten is doing important work. He offers hope.
