The fifth stage of spiritual apprenticeship is guru devotion. In this stage, the focus is on the blessing the person receives from the presence of the teacher. This devotion is typically very intense, although the extent of guru devotion varies among Bud- dhist and Hindu groups. This movement toward independence is critical, for one of the dangers of the guru system is that the student can become addicted to the power of the teacher and dependent upon them.

This is an excellent companion for anyone in any stage of any spiritual path, including just being curious or beginning to look around at what's possible. I especially recommend it to anyone with heartbreak or disillusionment with any spiritual teacher, even if it was long ago and you feel you have healing and perspective on the experience. There might be more for you in this book. Muktananda was the author's core teacher and Bogart is able to stand with both the gifts and the damage Baba brought to his devotees. The author writes in a grounded way about being human and Divine, giving examples of his own path and practices. He also includes experiences from many others, some in writings from traditional sources we have heard of before, others from unknown individuals.

A note to astrologers: Greg Bogart has written other - also excellent - books on astrology. Although this is NOT an astrological book, it managed to expand for me Jeffrey Wolf Green's astrological writings about spiritual stages and cracked open my understanding of the core "skipped step" in my own chart which has baffled me for years. When I closed the book, I was living the solution to the skipped step.
