The gift of fire : how I made adversity work for me, Dan Caro with Steve Erwin. I encouraged Dan to write this book after receiving thousands of letters from people who told me how much inspiration they received from watching him on my PBS special. I love the beautifully honest rendition he’s given of his life in these pages. Yet nothing written here (or anywhere) can begin to depict the soul of Dan Caro. His determination and courage leave me in awe, and his sense of humor about it all leaves me breathless. His original title for his book was Look, Ma, No Hands!

Dan Caro has been proving the world wrong since he was in diapers. When he was two years old, he was engulfed in a fireball during a gasoline explosion in the family garage and was left with third-degree burns over most of his body - so severe that doctors held out little hope he'd survive more than a few days. Dan was in such excruciating pain that his devastated parents silently prayed for God to end their son's suffering and welcome him into heaven. And it seemed as if God was willing to oblige - Dan technically died on the operating table several times in the hours following the accident. But even though his heart stopped, Dan's spirit wasn't ready to give up . . . somehow he knew he had work to do. Despite the odds, Dan survived, but life would not be easy. The fire left him badly maimed and disfigured. His hands were burned away, as was most of his skin and nearly all of his face. He would endure years of painful surgeries and endless months of lonely isolation in burn units, only to suffer the agony of social rejection, shunned and called ''monster'' by both children and adults in his Louisiana hometown. With the support of his loving parents and siblings, Dan did not despair. He kept his heart open to the world and focused on the positive energy around him. Before his sixth birthday, he vowed that his life would not be defined by the way others saw him or the restrictions of his so-called physical handicaps. Dan set himself a series of life goals, starting with the art of tying his shoelaces without fingers. Once he had achieved that milestone, he decided he could do anything . . . so why not learn to play the drums? When Dan was told he'd never be able to do so, he promised himself that one day he'd become one of the most accomplished drummers in the city that gave jazz its name - New Orleans! Since that day, Dan's music has inspired thousands, and many more have also been inspired by his personal philosophy of focusing on the positive, refusing to accept limits, and living life with an open heart. Today, the young man who was once shunned and called ''monster'' by his neighbors is very much in demand as a public speaker and travels the country encouraging others to not just overcome life's hardships, but to view adversity as a gift that can drive us toward reaching our full potential.

Our family first learned of Dan Caro from watching a PBS special of Dr. Wayne Dyer's. We were simply blown away. Through FACEBOOK we became aware that Dan was writing a book. We couldn't wait to read it. We ordered the book from amazon and it has already been read by 4 family members who could not put it down once they started reading it. Dan Caro is one of the most amazing people you will ever learn to know through his story. He will reach down inside of the deepest part of your soul, touch your heart with both a smile and sadness (for all he has endured since the age of two), and inspire you beyond , beyond, beyond. In addition to Dan's CAN DO attitude of which he humbly calls "adversity", you may continue your inspirational quest after reading the book by googling him on youtube. To see a young man who was burned beyond recognition at age two, sit behind a drum set and PROFESSIONALLY play drums WITH NO HANDS will change your life and your way of thinking. If you think you are having a bad day, than read Dan Caro's personal story. Dan's story is a true testament to the power of the power of the mind and the will to live. We all have days that we feel sorry for ourselves and have "pity parties" but Dan's tenacity shows that no matter what life has "dealt" us, we can rise above the adversity and find the gift that has been given to us. Dan could be telling what a terrible life he has and have his hand out. However, Dan chose to find ways around the inability to do things that we take for granted. Through perseverance he learned not only to tie his shoes but and found a way to do something that he loves, the desire to be a musician. Dan is now not only playing the drums that he loves, but he is also working with Wayne Dyer, taking his message to people, showing them that we can rise above the adversity in our lives and find the gift wthin the adversity. Dan's story is very inspirational and I have passed this book on to others. Thank you Dan for sharing your wonderful story.

Great book by a burn survivor! One to add to my collection. He is very inspirational and a tough person, too. An easy read overall, but some medical parts were hard for me as a burn survivor. Definitely in my top 5 for books by burn survivors.

It is great to see that Dan Caro has added "Author" to his growing list of extraordinary achievements. Aside from being a powerful and unforgettable story demonstrating how hope, courage and strength brings out the very best in people; this is an important and inspiring book for those who think life is unfair yet do little to improve their station in life. Give Dan a chance to show you how it is done. You will be a better person after reading this gem of a book.
We often take our beautiful, blessed lives for granted . . . Dan's story puts life in perspective. Straight-forward writing with an amazing lack of self-pity left me feeling grateful and totally 'wowed' by the author's courage and determination. Great read!
