The Runaways (Regency Romance, Signet). Why he feels compelled to act honorable toward her when she plainly deceived him so that she'd ensnared him is beyond me.

The Runaways (Regency Romance, Signet). Clare's chestnuts are pulled from the fire by Lady Michaels' interference. Why she bothers, I'm not sure why.

com User, April 2, 2006. This book was delightful from cover to cover. It's nice to read a regency where the hero is in love with the heroine right from the beginning, even though she is skeptical. There are lots of laughs along the way until she finally believes him. 0.

Dangerous Deceits (Signet Regency Romance). I actually liked her more than the hero, which is usually the other way around. Barbara Hazard is an extremely talented author and I will definitely check out more of her work.

Signet Books was an imprint of the New American Library (NAL), which was established as an autonomous American publishing house after branching off from its British-based parent company, Penguin Books. Signet had the longest running Regency series, beginning in the late 1970s and ending in February 2006. It generally published three books each month, though this varied over the years. Signet also produced reissues, both of their own previous releases as well as those of other publishers.

The dialogue between our hero, the Duke of Clare, and heroine, Miss Diana Travis, was sparkling. He falls in love and decides to pursue her in what can only be called a "full court press." She resists and tries to discourage him. Odd that the author makes heroine's age "almost eighteen," yet gives her the maturity and poise of a twenty-five year old. In fact, it's so odd, that it's unbelievable. Then the older (he's nearly thirty) and presumably wiser duke ends up acting the more immature of the couple.

I did not like his stupid reactions to Lady Ponsonby's machinations---either one of them. He sends a love letter to Diana, which Lady Ponsonby intercepts. When he doesn't receive a reply, he assumes the worst, that she's not interested. Even though he knows full well that not only is Lady Ponsonby's dying to marry him, but that she lives with Diana and would have access to the mail. Then when Ponsonby tells Clare that Diane's engaged to someone else, he readily believes her and promptly proposes to Ponsonby IN THE NEXT INSTANT. Come on! He never tried to verify this heart crushing news with anybody else? Someone, perhaps, who could be impartial? He's also blind to the mischief his mother is capable of stirring up and after a lifetime with her, I don't understand how he could be.

So now he's engaged to the Sensuous Ice Maiden, Lady Ponsonby, and finds it impossible to get out of that situation in an honorable manner. Why he feels compelled to act honorable toward her when she plainly deceived him so that she'd ensnared him is beyond me. Clare's chestnuts are pulled from the fire by Lady Michaels' interference. Why she bothers, I'm not sure why. The H and h have their HEA, but I felt their mental ages should have been transposed by the time they figure out they love each other. Diana's declaration of love was uncharacteristically tepid of her. But the Epilogue was worthwhile.

In a nice departure from most later Regencies, the hero wants the heroine *for marriage* from the start. (I dislike plots where the hero wants to ruin the heroine before he realises he's in love.)

The Duke of Clare is masterful in his efforts to get closer to the heroine, and amused by her attempts to resist him. These episodes make for some fiery and yet amusing scenes between them as they are both hot-tempered and determined characters.

The only real fault with this book is that the misunderstandings between the two go on a little too long. The heroine is a believable 17 years old and can be forgiven her unworldliness, but the hero is ten years her senior and really should see the truth sooner than he does.

The duke's sister and the heroine's great-aunt make great conspirators and are amusing characters in their own right. As usual with Barbara Hazard, the writing is excellent and the Regency "tone" is present. It's one of her best efforts.

I could not put it down until it was finished. This wonderful book tells of Miss Diana Travis who beleived herself to be a plain country miss, unworthy of the attention of a Duke and renowned rake. But the Duke feels differently on that subject.
