Since then, Rove has devoted his life to conservative politics-and he has been accused of everything from campaign chicanery to being a war criminal. Here, he sets the record straight, responds frankly to his critics, and passionately articulates the reasoning behind the choices he made during campaigns and in the White House. With never-before-told details about his own controversial career, the legacy of the Bush presidency, and America during its most trying moments, Rove intimately relates the joys and pains of a life in service of conservative conviction.

From the moment he set foot on it, Karl Rove has rocked America’s political stage. He ran the national College Republicans at twenty-two, and turned a Texas dominated by Democrats into a bastion for Republicans. He launched George W. Bush to national renown by unseating a popular Democratic governor, and then orchestrated a GOP White House win at a time when voters had little reason to throw out the incumbent party. For engineering victory after unlikely victory, Rove became known as “the Architect.” Because of his success, Rove has been attacked his entire career, accused of everything from campaign chicanery to ideological divisiveness. In this frank memoir, Rove responds to critics, passionately articulates his political philosophy, and defends the choices he made on the campaign trail and in the White House. He addresses controversies head-on— from his role in the contest between Bush and Senator John McCain in South Carolina to the charges that Bush misled the nation on Iraq. In the course of putting the record straight, Rove takes on Democratic leaders who acted cynically or deviously behind closed doors, and even Republicans who lacked backbone at crucial moments. Courage and Consequence is also the first intimate account from the highest level at the White House of one of the most headline-making presidencies of the modern age. Rove takes readers behind the scenes of the bitterly contested 2000 presidential contest, of tense moments aboard Air Force One on 9/11, of the decision to go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, of the hard-won 2004 reelection fight, and even of his painful three years fending off an indictment by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. In the process, he spells out what it takes to win elections and how to govern successfully once a candidate has won. Rove is candid about his mistakes in the West Wing and in his campaigns, and talks frankly about the heartbreak of his early family years. But Courage and Consequence is ultimately about the joy of a life committed to the conservative cause, a life spent in political combat and service to country, no matter the costs.

This book was pretty dry. It was interesting as it told of Rove's role inside the Bush White House during the war on terror, during his two campaigns for the presidency but if you are not already in the Bush camp, this book will absolutely bore you to death. Write me a book that appeals to the masses sot that it captures the moment. This was a personal account and summary of the Bush presidency and his view of it and role in it. If you can appreciate the book for what it is, which it is indeed that, than you will enjoy it. From that perspective, I certainly did.

Full disclosure: I am a registered republican and voted for George Bush 43.

The book will give you some insights on what happened behind the scenes during the second Bush presidency. I liked Bush and believe history will be kind to him. If Rove is telling the truth, the politics inside the DC beltway are appalling. It's no wonder progress is difficult. It's a fairly quick read.

I gave it only three stars because by the end I was a bit tired of the narrative. I think he could have told the story in a more brief manner. Worth the time to read if you want the other side of the story.

Absolutely loved reading this book, very insightful on the early years of Karl Rove's life, the Bush years, and the Plame Wilson Affair. The best chapter in this book by far is Chapter 4 "What is a Rovian Campaign?" For any aspiring campaign manager or political operative, this chapter, and the book will be an important resource for you. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Bush administration, political campaigns, or the very interesting life of Karl Rove and his journey in politics.

Found this book to be compelling as to who was "Bush's Brain". Revealing as I have been a Bush supporter since he was Governor and this book is more about his tenure with President Bush. Fascinating as Rove discribes all of the stories regarding the news media, politicians to distort and persuade Americans to distrust Bush. The breakdown of Florida Hanging Chads, Bush Lied, Rove's Indictment and WMD's in Iraq, puts in place that Caveat Emptor is true for News and American politics. I only wish that this book would have addressed how Karl and GW dealt with Abu Ghraib. Best wishes to Karl and his family and I can't wait to read his next book.

An absolutely riveting insight into one of the most controversial campaign strategists of the last 50 years. The brains behind the George W Bush Texas and Presidential election, Rove provides not only a history, but an insight into political strategy that is unique, useful and relevant to our 2016 elections. A great read.

"Politics is a blood sport."

Mr. Rove parries his opponent's negative thrusts with his own countering stiletto facts. As with his GOP mascot, his memory is long and detailed. Very detailed. For this reviewer who was, until this recent administration, immune to political concerns, the book gives a fascinating insight into the man who states he long ago caught a strong case of Potomac Fever.

Karl Rove's very modest and dysfunctional family upbringing could well have made him a poster child for liberal politicians rather than a target for their political pot shots. Instead, he took on the challenges of his youth and turned them into the strengths of his adulthood. The challenge for the reader may be to remain oriented in the incredible amount of day to day political minutia and permutations.

As this reviewer delved deeper and deeper into this political tome, there dawned the realization that this is more a reference book than an autobiography. An image came to mind that rings of a tree were being counted from the center out; from Karl's narrow childhood experiences to his ever increasing rings of broader relationships and political involvement over the years. Many readers may find it useful to refer to the extensive table of contents and open to a particular time of Republican politics rather than getting lost in all the rings of time.

"Courage and Consequence" is a look into pages of recent events of a history we are all responsible for writing the next chapter.
