This fine book by Anthony Steinbock (hereafter AS) is centered on the theme of verticality; it is also, as the back of the book’s jacket says, a phenomenological view of religious experience based on mysticism. It is commendably ambitious. This ambition generates a philosophy centered in mysticism as it is phenomenologically explicated by AS. But at the same time it is a philosophy of religion and religious philosophy that, along the way, is a philosophy of the person and a critique of secularist culture.
