I've bought several books to learn italian over the last year or so and while I don't believe any one book will make you fluent, or even close, this one makes a great effort. It's a fun read, with lots of great info, what I find most useful is the little insights they give you into slang, the natural ways people speak and life in italy. The scenarios are humorous, which makes them fun to read and there's plenty of exercises, examples and great explanations for grammar. The accompanying cd is full of dialogue that is slow enough for a beginner to follow, and if they can't, there are transcriptions. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to self learning. You definitely want to pick up something that focuses more on grammar, and get perhaps a dictionary/flashcards for vocab, but this is a great tool for learning more natural speech, and getting explanations for some things that perhaps other books drop the ball on.

Good book. The cd that comes with it is virtually useless though. It is a series of conversations in Italian which are too advanced for a newbie to understand.

This is a wonderful text for the beginner ( which I am!). It is clearly written, illustrated in humorous ways so that the learner finds it a bit easier to recall some of the verb declension details which at this point seem to escape memory.

Quick and easy way to get the basics if you have a trip or something coming up. It won't make you fluent, however it will give you the basics--greeting people, shopping, obtaining lodging, etc.

Generally, I really like the book. However, it would be more helpful using CD. I didn't get CD with the delivery and it was written that CD is inside in the description. Disappointment :(

Perfect audio book!

This books comes with a CD, and Italian is spoken so fast that it's hard to make out what's being said or know what to listen for. I would recommend this book for someone who is somewhat familiar with Italian, not a beginner.

Each chapter contains some exercises, along with two short, realistic dialogues which are both amusing and filled with colloquial phrases -- a far cry from the overly-formal dialogues we often find in language books. The dialogues are on the CD, so you can both read and listen. I copied the CD onto my iPod.

Use this book as a fun way to get a good overview before diving into something more detailed.
