Reverend Dr John Wilson. John Wilson was an Inspector of Schools during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. His career in education spanned 50 years, during which time he inspected many schools in the Highlands and Islands, including Jura, Islay, Orkney, Argyll, Heisker and Iona.

John Locke offered the "blank slate" theory where humans are born into the world with no innate knowledge. An example is when a teacher lets the student analyze their past test results and the way they got those results. This includes amount of study time and study strategies. He recognized that something had to be present, however. This something, to John Locke, seemed to be "mental powers". Looking at their past study strategies can help them come up with strategies to improve performance.

Naturalistic theories. A few educational theorists view the education of the child as an unfolding process. The child develops inevitably as a product of nature, and the main function of the teacher is to provide the optimum conditions for that development. That view leads to the theory that the child’s experience is the essential thing. The consequences of Rousseau’s basic view have been (1) a reduced emphasis on knowing and greater emphasis on acting and doing, (2) a promotion of positive interests in learning, and (3) an encouragement of children to depend on their own resources.
