Authors who have this skill are always awe-inspiring to me. Except for Me and Thee feels like this to me: It's late in the afternoon and the sun is s Sometimes when I read a book, I like to think about the impressions that it leaves on my soul, the "feel" of the book, more than the actual content. There is light and there is darkness. The darkness makes the light priceless.

This book and it's companion, The Friendly Persuasion, show Jessamyn West to be unjustly forgotten and unread. Each book is a collection of short stories, which gives the author a great deal of freedom to portray these complex, unforgettable characters without the novelist's need to bring each theme to a conclusion. In fresh, stunning prose we are with them, their inner dialogue, their fears, their differences, their beliefs, in their youth, their middle years, and their old age. They all interact with such authenticity, their humor and passion, their mistakes and sorrows. I don't know another American writer who can propel characters so naturally. And you almost have to read it slowly, to savor each authentic, moving piece and moment. Academe has fallen so in love with movements, with lists and political criteria that they have shoved aside this marvelous human testimony, this quiet sermon on the mount in favor of the unsubtle tracks in the mud with a carefully policed message. This is a genuine item of Samaritan genius, if only the Pharisees would look. Read Ms. West, the ordinary human's most perceptive and loving Annalist.

Oh, this is such a wonderful book. It's written about a family of Quakers at the time of the American Civil War. They are faced with circumstances and choices that challenge their basic beliefs, and rise to meet them with grace, intelligence, love, and humor. I definitely recommend it. I'm planning on reading Jessamyn West's companion novel, The Friendly Persuasion, next.

I looked forward to reading this book, because as a Quaker I wanted to read more fiction that involved Quaker testimonies. The book is sweetly written, and entertaining. However, West skips years at a time in the life of this family. It is more a compilations of short story snippets rather than one continuous plot. A good book, but I probably won't re-read it.

A fun, happy book by this author, in keeping with her earlier work of "The Friendly Persuasion". Same characters, different stories of life and family in late 1800's in Southeast Indiana.
