The Book of the New Sun (1980–1983) is a series of four science fantasy novels, a tetralogy or single four-volume novel written by the American author Gene Wolfe. It inaugurated the so-called "Solar Cycle" that Wolfe continued by setting other works in the same universe. Gene Wolfe had originally intended the story to be a 40,000-word novella called "The Feast of Saint Catherine", meant to be published in one of the Orbit anthologies, but during the writing it continued to grow.

Shadow & Claw book . One aspect of The Book of the New Sun I really enjoy is how Gene Wolfe has a lot of sci-fi elements lurking in the background, like aliens, wormholes and the true nature of Jonas, and the casual mention of what might in fact be laser guns.

Shadow & Claw contains the first two: The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator, which respectively won the World Fantasy and Nebula Awards. Sword and Citadel – and, indeed, the entire Book of the New Sun, is fairly unclassifiable, a blend of fantasy and science fiction told by an unreliable narrator, a story where almost all of the plotting is done through subtext and implication, where the world being built may be the story, rather than the plot we’re presumably watching unfold. So, the actual author is merely a translator. He states that there are numerous word substitutions for various reasons as it is set in the future.

Shadow & Claw brings together the first two books of the tetralogy in one volume: The Shadow of the Torturer is. .

Shadow & Claw brings together the first two books of the tetralogy in one volume: The Shadow of the Torturer is the tale of young Severian, an apprentice in the Guild of Torturers on the world called Urth, exiled for committing the ultimate sin of his profession - showing mercy toward his victim. Ursula K. Le Guin said, "Magic stuff. Gene Wolfe (1931-2019) was the Nebula Award-winning author of The Book of the New Sun tetralogy in the Solar Cycle, as well as the World Fantasy Award winners The Shadow of the Torturer and Soldier of Sidon.

Gene Wolfe's masterpiece set After the End in a Feudal Future which seems to be Low Fantasy, but is actually science fiction - though this is only subtext during the first four books, becoming overt in the coda. It tells the story of Severian, an apprentice of the Torturer's Guild who turns out to be a kind of Messianic Archetype

The Shadow of the Torturer. The Claw of the Conciliator

The Shadow of the Torturer. The Claw of the Conciliator. The Sword of the Lictor. The Citadel of the Autarch. The Urth of the New Sun, a coda. It is, along with the Book of the Long Sun tetralogy and Book of the Short Sun trilogy, part of the Briah cycle, also known as the Solar cycle The rare supplementary books Lexicon Urthus by Michael Andre-Driussi (which explains some of the more oblique aspects of The Book of the New Sun, as well as the archaic terminology) and The Castle of the Otter (a collection of essays by Wolfe himself about various aspects of the series).

The Book of the New Sun (1980-3) by Gene Wolfe is a novel in four books, set in the distant future of the dying earth science fiction subgenre, when the aging Sun grows dim.

I loved Shadow and Claw – was blown away, in fact. I suspect you'll mostly be huge fans, but I'd be interested to know why you think The Book of the New Sun isn't better known. The whole thing is dreamlike in quality, unfathomably large in scope, deliciously, slyly puzzling. It's enormous fun picking away at Severian's ideas about the past of his far future Urth, at the mysteries of his companions Jonas (why does he have a mechanical hand?) and Dorcas (was she resurrected?), at what the Claw might actually be – and at how truthful and accurate our narrator, for all his protestations that he remembers "every rattling.
