I first started reading Robert Westall in 7th grade, and was instantly hooked. I started with "The Machine Gunners," a story about a boy who is orphaned during the blitz in WWII England. He and his friends find a crashed German fighter, and later capture it's pilot and eventually befriend their enemy.

The Watch House was the second of Westall's books I read. It's a story of a girl who visits her elderly relatives on the sparsely inhabited English coast. Her boredom is replaced by adventure when she discovers a plea for help written in dust in an unused part of the coastal watch house. The writing turns out to have been written by a ghostly inhabitant of the watch house. The ghost is tormented by another ghost, and as the girl unravels the secret hidden past of the watch house and its surrounding area, she has to figure out how to help the tormented ghost.

Nice book - good start, well written, interesting ghost story within a ghost story angle. It ultimately ends up with nowhere to go, having escalated beyond the nieghborly confines that gave the story its earlier charm. The ending is therefore dissatisfying - the last act not fitting what came before.

Better suited to advanced 4th graders and over than to yuonger kids.

This is a ghost story. It may be a little intense for some kiddies.
