Alberto Moravia (Author). Apart from his first work GLI INDIFFERENTI, IL CONFORMISTA is probably the author's most successful novel. Well, the most infamous anyway. The setting is fascist Italy just prior to the Second World War and the plot is loosely based on the assassinations of two of Moravia's cousins who were political activists standing up to Il Duce's regime.

Bertolucci’s wonderful film was an adaptation of this book, the title of which announces Alberto Moravia’s intention to construct a novel that is at once both psychological and socio-political. If you haven’t seen the film, I urge you to seek it out. Whether or not you get to see the film, I recommend that you read this novel.

The Conformist (Il conformista) is a novel by Alberto Moravia published in 1951, which details the life and desire for normalcy of a government official during Italy's fascist period.
