Born in 1930 in Wellington, New Zealand, Mitcalfe studied at Victoria University of Wellington, where he received a Diploma in Education in 1962, and a Bachelor of Arts (with honours) in 1963.

Barry Mitcalfe (31 March 1930 - 1986) was a New Zealand poet, translator, and peace activist. Mitcalfe was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand. He studied at Victoria University of Wellington, where he earned a diploma in education in 1962 and a Bachelor of Arts (with honors) in 1963.

The gray water looked cold and oily

The gray water looked cold and oily. It rolled against the docks; and the prows of boats cleaved it like knives slicing dark gelatin. They had a window table at The Sea Locker. Initially, while Max and Lou talked politics, Mary sat in silence and studied the sky for sea gulls. But there were no birds today, and gradually she shifted her attention to the traffic on the harbor and to the conversation. At two o’clock, after Lou had gone to his office and they had returned to the motel, she stretched out on the bed, on her side, intending to take a nap. She would need to be rested and alert for the manhunt tonight. She closed her eyes and tried to switch off her mind.

Barry Metcalfe (28 September 1935 – 3 April 1980) was an Australian rules footballer who played a game with Hawthorn in the VFL and spent the early 1960s at Claremont. Metcalfe, who was used mainly as a wingman, played his first and only game for Hawthorn in the club's 1957 away game against Carlton at Princes Park. One of four Hawthorn players to debut that day, Metcalfe was on the bench and did not take to the field.
