Not an Agatha Christie fan, but read this book years ago and very happy to find it in the Kindle store

She has had leading roles in hundreds of radio plays and series. Not an Agatha Christie fan, but read this book years ago and very happy to find it in the Kindle store. I love the simplicity of the writing and the progression of the storyline. You can engage with the main character and her growing awareness of the changes in her family. The Agricultural calendar of Ancient Egypt, consisting of three seasons of four months of thirty days, formed the background of peasant life, and with the addition of five intercalary days at the end of the year was used as the official calendar of 365 days to the year. This ‘Year’ originally began with the arrival in Egypt of the flood-water of the Nile in the third week of July by our reckoning; but the absence of a Leap Year caused it to lag through the centuries, so that, at the time of our story, the official New Year’s Day fell about six months.

Death Comes as the End is a historical mystery novel by Agatha Christie, first published in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company in October 1944 and in the UK by the Collins Crime Club in March of the following year. It is the only one of Christie's novels not to be set in the 20th century, and - unusually for her - also features no European characters

I would so recommend Death comes as the end. It is interesting that I have read many an Agatha Christie . Unlike Christie's many other mysteries, such as her beloved Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple series, this one takes place in ancient Egypt

Unlike Christie's many other mysteries, such as her beloved Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple series, this one takes place in ancient Egypt. Although the story is technically about the murder of a concubine, it's actually more about the family drama among and the psychological landscape of the central family's members.

The Apotheoses of Lacspor
I first read this book over 40 years ago. It was the first Agatha Christie book I read. In my opinion it was also my favorite. I looked for it for years but couldn't remember the name. Then after doing a search on Amazon I found it. Reading it again I found it just as mesmerizing as I did long ago. This time I am keeping it. It is staged in ancient Egypt so does not have Poirot or Marple in it and it is marvelous. Can't say enough about it.

I am a big Agatha Christie fan and I was surprised to find that I had not read this book before. Although running true to her usual format of murders in a compact group of people culminating in the unmasking of the killer, this is different in that it is set in Ancient Egypt, and the reader is taken back to a period of history where superstition and ritual played a large part in everyday life. There are all the usual clues and red herrings that one comes to expect from an Agatha Christie murder but she also manages to evoke the atmosphere of the period making for a most unusual yet satisfying read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys something a little different.

This Agatha Christie mystery stands out, as it is set in ancient Egypt, far away in time and geography from St. Mary Mead and London. Many of the elements of a classic Christie are here, though: family conflicts, good vs. evil, and of course, murder and mystery! As usual, Christie presents us with a likeable protagonist who finds herself in a scary situation; she's unsure who to trust as events unfold.

Christie was married to an archeologist (Max Mallowan)and part of this novel's charm is how she weaves her experiences in the Middle East into the story, just as she does with English life. Maybe the mystery itself is not Christie's strongest, but it is still effective and the unusual setting make up for anything the plot lacks. Therefore, it is deserving of five stars

I've been a fan of Christie's for many years but I'm particularly fond of Death Comes as the End. The ancient world setting makes it unusual but also draws on her knowledge of ancient life gained through her years with Max Mallowan and colleagues. So the voice of this novel is a little different and that's refreshing, though it's as good a whodunnit as ever she wrote.

So far as I know, this is the only mystery book Agatha Christie wrote that was not set in the time in which she was writing. This one is set in ancient Egypt, but the solution is just a baffling as always. Read it. You'll love it.

I've loved this story from the first time I read it, many years ago, and was glad to get it on Kindle and reread it. The characters are memorable and distinctive, and the clues are scattered as the family members die, one by one. And I love the ancient Egyptian setting.

This is a lesser-known work by the world's most famous mystery writer, and it is a pity it is not better known and more easily obtained. The story is set in ancient Egypt but the passions and motives, murder and discovery are universal to humankind; the author's preface points this out. The exotic setting is just icing on the cake so to speak.

I myself am even more interested in Egyptology than in murder mysteries. The author delivered solidly on both fronts. I really reccomend this book particularly to those who enjoy the growing field of historical mysteries.
One of my most favorite stories. I enjoy anything with Ancient Egypt as a background and the mystery is really well written. One of the things I most appreciate about Agatha Christie's style is that you have all of the information to figure it out yourself if you know how to look for it. All of her stories deal with the different aspects of human nature and this is no exception. I think it's the sign of a good murder mystery writer when you can feel for the victims and the murderer -- and as often as not you feel for the murderer more.
