With The Silk Roads, Peter Frankopan has attempted to redress this imbalance. Author Peter Frankopan sets out, mostly successfully, to reorient our knowledge of history as taught in Europe and North America - history as viewed through the lens of Western Civilization courses.

With The Silk Roads, Peter Frankopan has attempted to redress this imbalance. My quibble is that this is still a view of Central Asia though European eyes, and arguably the author pays slight attention to the history of ancient India and China and overplays the history of Central Asia and Western misconceptions of the Mongols.

In his new book, The Silk Roads, Frankopan has created something that forces us to sit up and reconsider the world .

Peter Frankopan doesn’t mention Mackinder, but this was the terrain he chronicled .

Peter Frankopan doesn’t mention Mackinder, but this was the terrain he chronicled in his sweeping 2015 history The Silk Roads. In The New Silk Roads, he offers an extended epilogue that argues for the heartland’s continuing centrality to 21st-century trade and security. What The New Silk Roads contributes is a concise illustration of this shift from a Eurasian vantage point. And while China may be a game-changing market for Starbucks (which is planning to open 2,000 coffee shops there by 2021), as Europe once was for Chinese tea, such consumption shifts don’t pack the ecological punch of the Columbian exchange.

What was most appealing about this book to me was that the eye view of whatever is happening in each time period was primarily kept on the area of the world we know as the Silk Roads. The turbulent Middle East and the mysterious lands of Central Asia. Mr. Frankopan was able to give these cultures and places more of a voice in their importance as well as contribution to knowledge and culture that most Eurocentric or Far East centric historical books tend to give.

Frankopan realigns our understanding of the world, pointing us eastward. It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures and religions
