Abstract Geomorphology, the study of landforms and their formative processes, is a multidisciplinary field most strongly associated with the geographical and geological sciences. It encompasses numerous subfields of specialization that are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Like all disciplines, what geomorphology is like today derives in part from the practitioners, ideas, controversies, and events involved in its development.

Geomorphology is the study of landforms and the processes that shape them, past and present. Quaternary geology studies the sediments and associated materials that have come to mantle much of Earth's surface during the relatively recent Pleistocene and Holocene epochs.

GEOMORPHOLOGY CONCEPT The surface of Earth is covered with various landforms, a number of which are discussed in various entries throughout this book. This essay is devoted to the study of landforms themselves, a subdiscipline of the geologic sciences known as geomorphology. Updated Media sources (1) About encyclopedia. Soil Geomorphology book.

Geomorphology is the scientific study of landforms and landscapes. It is closely related to soil science, hydrology, geology and environmental science, and is being increasingly applied in planning, mining and hydrological sectors, and within environmental consultancy and tourism. In the late 20th Century geomorphology focused on the investigation of surface processes and the way these processes create small-scale landforms. The plate tectonics revolution in the earth sciences and the beginning of planetary exploration have, however, greatly broadened the scope of landform analysis.
