If you are a non-geographer or new to GIS, get a quick introduction to the "lay of the land" of GIS through the new "Spatial Learner's Permit" section. In existence since 1962, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are really coming into their own today. And not just in your car's GPS system or your cell phone's tracking capabilities.

I had been working with a couple of GIS sites when I was working for the Census so I picked GIS as my topic to learn more about the tools I had been using with no training. The book does exactly what it says, it outlines the fundamentals of GIS.

Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems. Demers, himself, using this textbook. I found it to be a great textbook, and I particularly enjoyed his sense of humor in the book, a welcome addition to what I found to be a somewhat difficult and challenging topic. He has a good understanding of the topic, and a sensitivity to the needs of students that is unparalleled. I recommend it to anyone willing to put the effort into learning a new way of looking at geography and the world. A comprehensive and very understandable text. Michael DeMers currently works at the Department of Geography, New Mexico State University. Geographic information systems (GIS) and science are taught to undergraduates across many disciplines; we evaluate how this contributes to critical spatial thinking. Their current project is 'DeMers, Michael . 2017. Developing a Quest-Based GIS Course'. The institutional context of GIS: a model for development.

This book reads as a collection of lecture notes. The organization of the book has not fit either of the two classes I have taken which required its' use. There are typos in the mathematical formula. Illustrations were not always conveniently located in relation to the relevant text. Given the shocking price for new copies, these are not minor quibbles: how can a textbook of such poor quality in design, and so lacking in quality, be of use? I would recommend Bolstad for an introduction to GIS over this book, for too many reasons to list here. Gis Fundamentals: A First Text on Geographic Information Systems
