British Columbia travellers in the 1960s and 1970s remember the "Garbage Gobblers" at many viewpoints; Lyons designed these concrete green and yellow figures with big white teeth and a sign "Please Feed Me". He also planned the numerous Stop of Interest signs which were 50-word snippets of information along the province’s highways. He wrote several books (see Bibliography) and is probably best known for Trees, Shrubs and Flowers to Know in British Columbia, plus several other popular field guides on the plants of British Columbia and Washington State.

While this book certainly has great written descriptions of all the plants, the illustrations were too generic, small and frankly, poor quality for me. I wanted a guide to take with me on field trips to refer to when I found something I couldn't identify, but this book doesn't work in that regard. Too bad - I had high expectations because of others' reviews. Still, once I've identified a plant by other means, this book does have some interesting information.,

Too complicated for regular people. Covers only the Seattle area, includes Canada and totally ignores the other two.thirds of the state
Oregon state has a much better book, simpler and comprehensive. Find someone to write one similar to theirs, suited for 10 year olds, decent photos, area maps and line drawings to illustrate size. Throw in a few birds and mammals that they might see. Keep it under 100 pages. Honestly, it's not that hard!

the handiest plant iden. book for this area i have found...i've lost track of how many of these i've given to friends so they can further enjoy plant identification as i do...latest on came today ( march 13 15) i don't know yet where it is headed...i ful;ly expect to keepassing them to friends and Boy Scouts...if i could i'd give it a higher rathing than only top..

Ummm. Yes please. This is the updated version of the original "Trees, shrubs and flowers to know" (TS&F) that has added color images to the line drawings already present. This book has a larger breadth of knowledge and many more varieties than you'll find in the "Plants of Southern Interior BC and the Inland Northwest." I would honestly suggest getting both books if you're more than a casual observer. I'm a botany student and relied heavily on Parish, Coupe and Lloyd to help with my field botany classes. I would have had an even easier time if I had bought this guide too. Both of these books are actually required reading for my vegetative ecology class, but TS&F has been especially helpful to someone not from this region, who is trying to understand the broader picture of vegetation patterns in E. WA.

In the beginning of the book, the author discusses the various ecosystems of this region in depth, to help guide you to certain species you might expect in each area. Additionally, there is a fantastic map that breaks down elevation ranges for different trees shrubs and flowers in the region. The book also has a distribution map for each species so you can quickly ballpark if you're on target. I also appreciate how this book distinguishes between commonly confused species. One quirk however is that numbers listed for the different flower species DO NOT coincide with page numbers, but rather species numbers. These are also not always in order so there is a little hunting involved if you use the picture key to help you identify flower species.

If you're looking into this book, you should probably buy it and Paris, Coupe and Lloyd. Just saying, you won't regret it.

I am restoring 72 acres of wetlands on South Whidbey Island, WA - Earth Sanctuary. We have just put in over 4,800 plants, 59 species, as part of a 500-year plan to restore the property to mature old growth and promote maximum biodiversity. This is our guide for identifying and learning all the trees, shrubs, and flowers.

My expectations were higher, so I give this book two stars. Much b&w figures and relative few color pictures.
Gift for my sister-in-law. She loves it
