Caroline Coile is a PhD scientist of Animal genetics and behavior, and Margaret Bonham is pet behaviorist and trainer, and together they've put together a humorous little book that talks about the ins and outs of dog behavior. The approach they take is to pose a question, which they then answer. Questions like "Can female dogs cock their legs?"and "Do Dogs have Friends and Enemies", as well as more serious questions like "Can a dog be scent-blind?" and "Is cocoa mulch harmful to pets?"

As I said the book is humorous, but it's a gentle humor not a laugh-out-loud and fall to your knees funny. I found the answers not only interesting but informative. My 11 year old daughter liked it as well.

On the downside, some answers aren't "authoritative" or conclusive. Not because the authors haven't done their research, but because scientists don't know.

Not a book to sit down and read from cover-to-cover, but a fun read to leave in the car or 'the little room'.

Also want to note that this is NOT a book for young children as the chapter on dog 'reproductive' includes deviant behavior by adults, and just regular Q&A that moms and dads might not want their children to read about until they are older.

Not as informative or cute as I had hoped..I wasn't sure what to expect but since it was mainly facts, but not really to many "eye opening truths about dogs.

I have a large collection of books with information about dogs, and this book wasn't worth buying.

This is a funny, cute book about dogs. The author asks questions you've already wondered about, then fills in the answers in a few paragraphs, so it's an easy book to pick up and read for a few minutes, and then put down.

Have you ever wondered if dogs that only weigh a few pounds are stupider than dogs with large heads and, one would think, larger brains? "Head size doesn't correlate with intelligence" (p 35). Or how about this, why do dogs go crazy after you've given a bath? One possible reason is that he's celebrating getting out out of that rotten bath. The other is that he's trying to get off the smell of that perfumed shampoo.

Why does a dog dislike being hugged? Or, do older dogs need glasses? And here's one everyone's wondered about: is homemade food--the kind your dog whines for--good for him? And can a dog smell fear?

This book answers so many of the questions you've had about dogs. And it's lots of fun.

This book is not at all scientific or based on fact; it's mere guessing and observations on the part of the authors, and their observations are things any dog owner has recognized within a day or less of having a dog. So don't expect this to deliver any facts about dogs. And if you're looking to this book for humor or for quirky information, there's not much of that, either. A basic search will pull this up in Google Books and you can read a few chapters before buying.

Well written by a woman who has had dogs for all her life and through her under grad work and Ph.D. Caroline Colie has been there and knows her canines as her love shows through her enthusiasm as she writes. This is a great book for pure enjoyment while you might learn a little too. A great gift for a new dog owner.
