In his book Mind and Nature, Bateson describes co-evolution as a process in which interdependent species evolve in an endless reciprocal cycle-in which changes in species A set the stage for the natural selection of changes in species B -and vice versa. Consider predators and their prey, for instance, or flowering plants and their pollinators. Yet in any larger business environment, several ecosystems may vie for survival and dominance: the IBM and Apple ecosystems in personal computers, for example, or Wal-Mart and Kmart in discount retailing.

I DID NOT buy this book as a reference. I bought it because I once had several copies of it when it was new and have lost all of them. I got it for nostalgia's sake.

MOST of the information in it is very dated back to the late 70's, but THIS IS THE BOOK THAT STARTED IT ALL. It was Mel Tappan's Survival Guns that got all of those survivalists ( me included) hoarding away, guns, ammo, parts, food, and anything else we think we "NEED TO SURVIVE".

Some chapters still apply today. It has the best expaination about ammunition I have ever read (other than mine). It also has a few evaluations of individuals survival plans that are no different then as now.

The biggest CON, I can give thw book is his blatant and shameless advertising for King's Gun Works. This is ALSO the book that started all of the rippoff people saying you just gotta buy this thing or that thing, ONLY FROM THEM, or you will die. That has always been one of my biggest complaints about the modern PREPPER movement. Almost everyone is trying to take your money.

SIDE NOTE: He is no fan of the .357 magnum, so be prepared...LOL!!!

I find this, the original edition superior to the follow on published after the authors death. A true example of an authors work before its time. In this day and time of a declining economy, the threat of debt and currency collapse, this book makes more sense than ever, especially for those that describe themselves as "preppers"

I bought this book for my husband, to replace the copy that was falling apart! He says it's a great resource, even though it's almost as old as he is!

This book has excellent information but a lot has changed in 40 years. IE: Tappan's dismissal of the 9mm as a survival caliber was made prior to it becoming the standard issue for police and military. It is now so prolific that it is smart to have something chambered for it. There have been many other firearms related advancements and changes since this book was published. I still recommend it highly but someone should update the information.

I picked up a copy of "Survival Guns" shortly after it came out, and have always been glad I did. It remains one of my most underlined and scribbled in books.

As others have mentioned, much of the specific information is now, three decades later, dated. Even at the time, there was much opinion with which thoughtful people could disagree, but far and away the book's greatest strength was it's ability to push the reader to think through various issues. That remains today.

It doesn't matter if one comes to conclusions different from Tappan's: the thinking involved in differing with him is invaluable.

The book also needs to be read with an eye on the context of the time in which it was written: the late 1970s was a period of severely disruptive inflation, rising unemployment, an aggresive Soviet Union, Islamist revolution in Iran, and a federal government which appeared to many to be making things far worse rather than better.

People like Tappan extrapolated those trends and foresaw the possibility of calamitous social and economic breakdown. They set out to be prepared for the worst case. This book was one of the results, getting people thinking about the possible personal consequences of the sort of economic collapse we have been seeing in Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe, but in the US.

If "Survival Guns" provokes the reader to define in general just what scenarios are possible- and which are likely- and then to think about what sort of response would likely be the most productive, it will have served much of it's purpose. Not all scenarios require armed response, but some do. This is for the latter.

Even though there have been many changes in the firearm industry in the last 30 years or so, not so much has changed that you can't use the advice in this book. It is an exhaustive study, and many of the firearms reviewed are still available today, and are just as viable.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book, I will say my favorite parts were his recommendations for families based on their own particular survival situations, based on money, environment, experience, etc. He covered a gamut that can apply to everyone even today. I also enjoyed the perspectives of some of the well known figures Tappan interviewed for their choices, such as Jeff Cooper and Brad Angier. It's always interesting to see how your choices stack up to the 'experts' you read about!

While you may not agree with some of Tappan's choices, he will at least tell you why you should at least consider them, and that is his strength. He delivers his information in practical, logical terms. I recommend this be on every survival family's shelf, and that it be referred to over and over again.
Mel Tappan does a good job of laying out some principle uses of firearms in various circumstances. This promotes spending more money on guns. The book is dated as firearms have evolved with better choices now available.

But wait.... if you think that this will somehow promote your survival, that is a fantasy. Mel died from complications related to obesity, not a shortage of firearms in his collection. While a few guns are essential, most of us could better promote our personal survival with better health practices.
