Payne has written a history of Spain and Portugal which really is quite the pain to read. Stanley G. Payne is a historian of modern Spain and European Fascism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I just had to make that pun. But seriously, this was not very enjoyable. At least, the first ten or so chapters weren't. I only read the first volume, which takes the history of the peninsula to the year 1700, and I doubt I'll be reading volume 2. Out of all the talents this author may have, bringing history alive is certainly not one of them. He retired from full time teaching in 2004 and is currently Professor Emeritus at its Department of History. Books by Stanley G. Payne.

Most formal histories of Spain devote considerable space to the peninsula's prehistory. During the past century some attention has been given to archaeology, and even more to hypothetical definitions of the various ethnic groups that inhabited the region before the Roman conquest. A great deal of this remains speculation, for the data unearthed by archaeological study in Spain is still rather scant, and the origins, culture, and duration of pre-Roman ethnic groups are for the most part poorly defined. During the first millennium . Payne is the Hilldale–Jaume Vicens Vives Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His many books include The Franco Regime: 1936–1975; Fascism: Comparison and Definition; and Spain's First Democracy: The Second Republic, 1931–1936, all published by the University of Wisconsin Press.
