Fascinating collection for the Arctic fanatic. com User, September 27, 2003. All I can say is that, this is a beautiful picture volume that I am proud of owning for my Arctic book collection. Not only you will find lots of information regarding this polar region, you will also find numerous colour photos from the Canadian Archipelago islands, Greenland, some of Iceland, Norway, Svalbard (Norway), and Russia to name a few.

The Arctic has always been a region where the United States has pursued its strategic interests. But that was then; this is now. Much has changed since the United States last chaired the Arctic Council from 1998 to 2000.
The Arctic has always been a region where the United States has pursued its strategic interests. From the daring exploration and gold rush of the 1800s to the energy boom of the 1900s, Arctic economics have been a key driver of circumpolar development. Defense and security concerns in the region have been equally important. The United States constructed the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line in Alaska and the Soviets deployed nuclear weapons in the Arctic.

The harsh beauty of the Far North has long fascinated explorers and armchair tourists alike. Its exotic flora and fauna and forbidding terrain appeal to our curiosity and sense of wonder. In this lavishly illustrated book, the marvels and mysteries of the Arctic world are fully displayed. Here are dark, ominous, deserted landscapes in winter, a time when only a few creatures can be spotted, as well as exhilarating scenes of spring and summer, when the Arctic comes to life as days lengthen and millions of birds arrive to nest and thousands of seals migrate to land.
As the awe-inspiring pictures show, the Arctic is populated by an astonishing number of animals, including humpback and sperm whales, walruses, bearded and harp seals, polar bears, musk-oxen, Arctic foxes, reindeer, timber wolves, and scores of birds and fish. There are also views of a wide variety of hardy plants adapted to the rigors of long winters and short summers. In addition, this visual journey portrays the lives of the native peoples who have managed to survive the perils of life in a hostile environment on the northern edge of the world.
