I was an Internal Medicine doctor, until I retired in 2014. At 60, I could not work and I found I could not horseback ride anymore. I focused on my own health and losing weight. I was almost 300 lbs. My blood pressure and blood sugars were elevated. Thanks to this book I lost 50 lbs in 6 months. I then found out I had to have hip replacements. My legs were too tight to get on a horse. I had one hip replacement and since I am riding for one to two hours at a time. I still have problems mounting, but I manage, and I have a great Rocky Mountain horse who helps. I went off the plan, and lost another 10 lbs. I have recently restarted the plan in order to lose another 50 lbs. I now weigh less than I did in med school and am the same size I was in High school. His plan works! And it makes sense from a medical point of view. I recommend it to everyone I know who is trying to lose weight. I also go to Weight Watchers meetings almost every week to keep me accountable and provide a support group. If I had not started this plan, I might be diabetic with high blood pressure and confined to a wheelchair, or dead from a heart attack or stroke. MacDonald's plan gave me back my life!

Have tried a variety of "diets" and feel 100% that Mark's philosophy is spot on. However, it is not easy to transition to eating with his "3 Way" plan; every meal containing a protein, a carbohydrate and a fat. If you can master that, you will look and feel like a new person. I think they are building a library of meal ideas....I wish they would come up with a flip chart....some easy reference cards which help to make something to eat in a snap. I don't want to think or plan for food preparation all day. When I am ready to eat, I want to make something fast and be done. With his plan, eating every three or four hours requires that you do this. I just don't have enough diversity of meal plans in my head to do this over and extended time.

.... and I say that because it is a very sensible way to eat, and is probably the way we were all brought up to eat. Dinner in my family home was meat, potato and veg and that is basically what this book teaches. Each meal should provide protein, carb and fat, but in sensible sizes, not the enormous sized portions we have all become accustomed to eating. I am not dropping pounds every week while eating this way, but I am definitely losing fat and it is slowly coming off my stomach and bust, hopefully my weight will start to drop and I will then be satisfied. If you read the book, and it is a long tedious read in some places, and follow his pattern of eating you will lose weight. He advocates six meals a day, i.e. every three hours. In the beginning I thought this was ridiculous, but I have adjusted and now I really like it. I am never hungry and do not feel deprived and I don't snack. I am not craving chocolate which was my major down fall, when I food shopped I would always buy a candy bar and eat it on the way home, this is something I have stopped doing without even realizing it. I do eat a lot of veggies, and always have, but now I eat a lot more salad along with the protein, carb and fat. I have also switched to using coconut oil in my cooking, instead of olive oil, it appears to be much more satisfying. If you are like me and just hate the way you look and hate the way your clothes fit, then try the book and try this method of eating.
