I’ve had the pleasure of coaching hundreds of people on mindfulness based awareness through simple habits. Most are corporate executives and CEOs who spend a lot of time processing thoughts to make effective decisions. To cultivate mindfulness in everyday life, be aware of your surroundings. Keep your thoughts in the present moment instead of ruminating on the past or future. An exercise I ask my coaching clients to do involves taking a walk in nature and notice what is taking place around them, without adding a narrative to it.

I am a mindfulness-based psychotherapist and find that mindfulness is one of the best tools for helping people transform anxiety and depression. It is such a joy to find clearly written books like this and I recommend that readers learn everything they can about mindfulness and how to use it in their lives. I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation', available through Amazon.

“Is it good; what’s it about?”
“Yes it’s quite good. I’d give it a full five stars. It’s about being Mindful, in formal sitting meditation – or standing or walking or however you are.”
“What’s that mean Mindfulness?”
“Paying attention – living in the present moment. Dr. Jon teaches to focus on the breath, following the inbreath and the outbreath. This can then be focused on an area of the body that is directly connected with the breath such as the movement of the abdomen during relaxed breathing. Eventually one can focus on the entire body with its sensations, emotions and perceptions such as sounds and touch.”

“Yes. Breath, Belly and Body!”
“Ah. Very good”
“And is the teacher good?”
“Yes very. Dr. Jon incarnates his teaching and is quite charismatic. He’s entertaining and funny as well as being profound.”
“What would you say is the strength and weakness of this teaching?”
“Well I would say that its strength is its weakness – and visa versa.”
“How’s that?”
Ok. Alan Watts says Buddhism is Hinduism stripped for export. Well this is sort of like Buddhism stripped for export. Dr. Jon’s teaching carries the true essence of Buddhism which is universal – awakening to the miracle of life in the Here and Now - Awareness. Feeling the breath, hearing the wind, being fully alive! This is the strength of the teaching, conveying the universal essence without any of the cultural baggage related to Japan, Korea, China, India, Buddhism, and so forth; opening the way for a a truly American Zen, (only without the American and the Zen) that anyone can enthusiastically practice – whether Christian, Scientist, Doctor or Atheist, etc. We all need to practice attention to reality, wouldn’t you say?”
“Yes, of course. And the weakness?”
“Well, some of us like the chanting and devotional aspects of Meditation, and this essence teaching is a bit austere.”
“That can be supplemented by one’s own practices or other resources right?”
“Yes, of course. Like teachings of Thich Nhat Hahn.
“Well, let’s see if it changes your life!”
