Years ago, a "friend" did NOT return BOTH volumes. I ordered them from BN to replace mine. When I needed a particular poem from the first volume, I discovered the BN had sent me 2 second volumes. The 2 BN sent were entitled " A Treasury of the Familiar", and " A Second Treasury of the Familiar", but they were both the second volumes. Your vendor listed the dates of publication so iIwas able to get exactly what I needed! They are a compilation of poetry, speeches, songs....... of things fmiliar to those of us who grew up in the USA during the 19th century!!!

I chose this purchase when I recalled my teenage years of loving books that were intelligent and honored our heritage. I was proud to be born and raised in America at heart and this book often inspired my dreams of succeeding in life with prose, poetry, lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner, and beautiful Bible verses. It was written in 1959 and my copy of it unfortunately got eaten by small worms making holes into the beloved pages of literature from Abraham Lincoln's letters and inaugurational address, Henry Wadsworth Longellow's poetry, Ella Wheeler Wilcox's words, "Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep along", etc. However, as the title I chose for this review, my treasure stayed in my heart wanting to some day recover another great copy. I finally decided to search for it in Amazon.com and found a perfect the perfect one for pennies to what it is worth. The composer of this collection starts with these lines that encompass the richness of holding such a book in your hands (with a famous French line); "Et patati, et patata, Il a mis de tout de ce discours-la," which means, "put everything into it," indeed! This charming book of ancestors past who came into this country to raise the banner, our American flag, honors our hopes to have the Pledge of Aliegiance forever in the academic arena.

This is a beautiful book, that every family should have a copy. Our family does poem reading night. It has been a staple in our family for over 50 years. I got two copies for my cousins, so we could all have hour own copies to memorize poems for future family gatherings.

This collection of well-known (and some not so well-known) essays, poems and speeches was part of the fundamental building blocks of my literary development. Our parents read selections from it when I was little and I have loved the written word ever since. I couldn't believe it was available when I searched for it in Amazon.com!

The book covers an enormous range of literature, excerpts, poetry, quotes, sayings. Because it was published in the 1940s, it includes things that are nearly forgotten, that tie us to our grandparents time. The title word "Familiar," is misleading because of so much obscure material. The coverage is so broad it's hard to define. It's definitely in the top dozen or so of my favorite books.
