Alan Dugan (February 12, 1923 – September 3, 2003) was an American poet.

Alan Dugan (February 12, 1923 – September 3, 2003) was an American poet. His first volume Poems published in 1961 was a chosen by the Yale Series of Younger Poets and went on to win the National Book Award for Poetry and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. His last volume, entitled Poems Seven: New and Complete Poetry, was published in 2001 by Seven Stories Press in New York City and won Dugan a second National Book Award. Since his death in 2003, a complete volume of collected poetry has yet to appear.

First books, especially volumes of verse, are often relegated to obscurity, but Alan Dugan's Poems was greeted with enthusiasm. Poems was awarded the National Book Award in 1961 and the Pulitzer Prize. Dugan's style and tone have remained consistent throughout his career.

Poetry of Alan Dugan, an underrated master. It's because of his VOICE. Theme-wise, he navigates well the socio-political chaos and absurdity of the parlous present, but heck how CHATTILY, how CONVERSATIONALLY, he talks about it! LOQUACIOUSLY rattling on in that inimitable street-corner buttonholing TONE of his, wry, wacky, at, all in arm-gesturing and eyebrow-raising SPEECH-STYLE.

I first read Alan Dugan in 1962. I have all six, now seven, volumes of his poetry. I taught his poems to my students of all ages for 30 years.

Yet Dugan remained aloof from the academy; as a result, his profile gradually dimmed, though he retained an enthused (and amused) core of fans, among them ex-Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. This carefully constructed, funny and sometimes unvarying volume combines all six of Dugan's previous books with a decade's worth of new verse. I first read Alan Dugan in 1962.
