Goethe's Poetry for Occasions. ERNST M. OPPENHEIMER. Book Description: The author examines a representative number of Goethe’s poems, masques, theatrical prologues, and so on, and defines the circumstances of their origin, sometimes in detail and always in the context of the great artistic, social, and political movement of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Oppenheimer also authored the nonfiction books Marilyn Lives! . Oppenheimer worked as a printer before serving as the first director of the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s in-the-Bowery Episcopal Church.

Oppenheimer also authored the nonfiction books Marilyn Lives! (1981), about Marilyn Monroe, and The Wrong Season (1973), about the New York Mets’ challenging 1972 season. His play, The Great American Desert (1961), was the inaugural production of the Judson Poets’ Theater. He wrote for the Village Voice from 1969 to 1984, and many of his columns are gathered in Drawing from Life: A Selection of Joel Oppenheimer’s Work from the Village Voice (1997).
