The Histories of King Kelson. Nor had young Kelson hesitated to seize his unholy patrimony and use it to overturn almost everything Loris held sacred, not the least of which was the Church’s stand against the use of magic in whatever form.

The Histories of King Kelson. The Quest for Saint Camber. The Heirs of Saint Camber. The Harrowing of Gwynedd. And all of this had been done under the guise of his Divine right to rule and his sacred duty to protect his people-though how a king could justify consorting with the powers of evil to effect that protection was beyond Loris’ comprehension.

The Bishop's Heir is a fantasy novel by American-born author Katherine Kurtz. It was first published by Del Rey Books in 1984. It was the seventh of Kurtz' Deryni novels to be published, and the first book in her third Deryni trilogy, The Histories of King Kelson. Although The Legends of Camber of Culdi trilogy was published immediately prior to the Histories trilogy, The Bishop's Heir is a direct sequel to Kurtz' first Deryni series, The Chronicles of the Deryni.

The Bishop's Heir book. Archbishop Loris, the man The Bishop’s Heir is the first book in Katherine Kurtz’s trilogy called THE HISTORIES OF KING KELSON but it’s a direct sequel to High Deryni, the third book in her CHRONICLES OF DERYNI trilogy. Did you get that?) To get the most out of The Bishop’s Heir, you really need to read THE CHRONICLES OF DERYNI first.

With the first book in the Histories of King Kelson trilogy, acclaimed fantasist Katherine Kurtz continues her sweeping and magnificent history of a feudal society on an alternate medieval Earth-a complex world of war, political intrigue, faith, romance, and magic, where the courageous and enlightened are called upon to take up arms against the entrenched forces of ignorance and intolerance. Bishop's Heir, while technically the second series of Kelson books, is as much about his friends Morgan and Duncan as it is about Kelson. These aren't quite as good as the first series, but still enjoyable reading.

I can easily describe Katherine Kurtz The Bishop's Heir in one sentence: Brilliant. This novel, which is book one of the three part Chronicles of King Kelson, is absolutely brilliant. Kurtz weaves a rich tapestry of intrigue and war all set in an alternate reality. The plot of the story is strong, which is typical of a Kurtz novel. She obviously is well read on medieval History (. in Medieval English History) and religion

The Histories of King Kelson. So might Kelson also have been counted-half-breed and, therefore, outside the pale of Council protection-were it not for his father’s Haldane blood, and the addition that made to his already powerful Deryni heritage. It was the former that concerned the Council today, as rebellion grew in one of Gwynedd’s western provinces and her king prepared to designate his uncle as his heir before going on campaign to quell it, having yet no heir of his own body.

I have previously read almost the entire series from the author. These I bought to read on the go with my tablet in the Kindle app and they worked fine. I still love the series and wonder why Hollywood hasn't come calling.

I have read every book in the Deryni series more than once and was thrilled to see them finally released as e-books. All of these books are great! Ms. Kurtz takes you to a medieval world where people are afraid of people who have different powers. It shows what bigotry and prejudice can do to a world. You will love the characters and the storyline. I highly recommend this series.

I read this years ago and it was nice to revisit some "old friends" again, The Histories of King Kelson my favorite of the Deryni novels and are worth a look, though I would recommend reading the first series before the Histories.

I have always loved Katherine Kurtz and her Deryni books feel divinely inspired or channeled in. I find it impossible to believe that they didn't actually happen and she serves as the royal historian. Marvelous books.

After the opening chapter I thought I would not enjoy this book...too many people and places with names that drew me from the story...
Soon I was totally engrossed and the book won me over.
I'm very pleased that I had sense enough to purchase the sequels!

Bought it for my husband. He likes this author very much.
Nicely written installment in the series. Enough action and pathos for a well-rounded tale after a somewhat uneven Book 1.
