Widowed in middle age, Fanny McBride survives with her good sense and great spirits intact. No longer able to seek the protection of her husband, she now faces all of life's challenges alone.

But Fanny finds there are tragedies beyond losing her mate, and when her children are threatened she discovers resources of courage and energy she never knew existed.

"A compassionate testament to the strength of the human spirit...a story hard to put down and impossible to forget." (The Commonwealth Insider)

I liked Fanny McBride. It's a story that involves everyday people from several decades ago in England. Maybe not very educated people but fun. Tempers flare words are said its fun to have such a book come alive in my head while I read. Catherine Cookson always makes her characters come alive so that you feel you actually know them. Some you want to know some you would not like to.
Catherine Cookson was a very prolific writer and so far I have read only 4 of her novels so there is much reading pleasure ahead.

Good book

I wouldn't consider it her best but still good. The usual Cookson talent for depicting human nature , especially the poor of the Tyne Dock area of her childhood, their plight, foibles, disappointments and joys.

Captain America
