As anticipated
Whitecaster
The Flight examines a little known chapter of the Second World War
that resulted in one of the largest ethnic cleansings in history. For
understandable reasons there is little sympathy for German civilians
who died or were displaced from their homes during and after the war.
After all many were the same citizens who voted Hitler to power in the
last democratic elections before he used his victory to declare a Nazi
dictatorship. When elected to power in 1933 in the throes of the Great
Depression, Hitler promised to rebuild their country. By the time he
committed suicide twelve years later in a bunker in Berlin some
fourteen million ethnic Germans had either fled their homes in front
of the advancing Soviet troops or waited to be forcibly expelled from
homes they had lived in for hundreds of years. "They got was they
deserved," is the oft repeated refrain from westerners with little
knowledge of Germany's complex history and perhaps they did, but for
those interested in the entire picture The Flight takes readers on a
journey into a grey area of history where you are left to draw your
own conclusion. It is a brisk and compelling read that in the case of
this reader altered my view of an event, WWII, that I thought I fully
understood. A highly recommended page turner.

Mr. Malessa takes us on a tour of Eastern Germany during WWII and explores the plight of ethnic Germans and their struggles to survive the holocaust as well. The story follows a mother's tireless efforts to save her children from death, ultimately Mr. Malessa takes you down a dark road, a very detailed and well researched novel that gives you the feeling that you are in the moment with the characters.
