The caper story is a subgenre of crime fiction. The typical caper story involves one or more crimes (especially thefts, swindles, or occasionally kidnappings) perpetrated by the main characters in full view of the reader. The actions of police or detectives attempting to prevent or solve the crimes may also be chronicled, but are not the main focus of the story.

First published in 1980, "Caper' by Lesley Andress (pen name of Lawrence Sanders) has lost none of its charm. I scarcely noticed the lack of social media and cell phones. Jannie Shean has authored many best-selling crime novels. But when her latest book is rejected by the publisher because it is dull and lifeless, Jannie decides on a bold move. After moving to a seedy section of New York City and adopting a fictitious name, Jannie sets about to plan the perfect crime, or caper. But when her research brings her into contact with master criminal Jack Donohue, she gets far more than she bargained for.
Lawrence Sanders is dead, but this story is a living, breathing thing. My heart was in my throat, there were butterflies in my stomach and tears in my eyes a couple of times. I’ve read his deadly sins/commandment books and his McNally series, but this one was the best. It’s a thoroughly entertaining read, and I recommend it.
I really enjoyed this book. Very clever plot that kept me going until the very end. The characters were all interesting and played their parts well. This was definitely a very good read!
It started off a bit slow but then I got hooked. The author takes you for a wild, crazy ride into the world of the con.
I first read this book as a teenager in the 80's and have reread it over and over throughout the years. It would make a great movie. I think Natalie Portman as Jannie/Bea and Benjamin Bratt as Jack Donohue. Great book!!
I enjoy the writings of Lawrence Sanders. Have been reading his books for years.

Read this while cruising to Panama and Costa Rica and could not put it down! Better than line dancing on the deck with a bunch of strangers!
I enjoy Lawrence Sanders books. I especially enjoy the Edward X Delaney series. This is a quick read and a great beach book.
