I have seen the movie of the same name many times. So, when I saw the book pop up I said, "What the heck". It is a little different from the movie-in that it is more "book" action than "movie" action. Also, I found it interesting that in the book, they avoided killing any more than necessary (in the movie, people are killed like crazy).

I also found the relationship of the characters was different than in the movie-that made it a little more interesting than just reading a screenplay of the movie.

If you have never seen the movie, this book makes a good story on its own. However, I will say that action is somewhat muted compared with the movie.

ANYTHING by Alistair MacLean is worth the time and money involved for you to get it. It's when movie producers buy the rights to it that problems start. regards - the Satan Bug, good book, rotten movie.

I have to admit that Where Eagles Dare and Ice Station Zebra run neck and neck as to my absolute favorite books by MacLean. I'm hoping that somebody will eventually do an UNABRIDGED audio book of them. Zebra, what can I say?, submarine, under the polar ice cap with a fire on board and a spy/saboteur running around the place. Eagles, Richard Burton & Clint Eastwood - those three things together made a great movie and an even better book.

Just be warned that you're never exactly sure of what's what until you get to the end.

enjoy

MacLean does not write ZIP-BAM-POW type of book but an intriguing pot boiler

I never saw the movie so I had no idea what this book was about. It is very exciting. An unbelievably complex mission to uncover double agents. The writing was great and I loved the suspense. I gave it 4 stars because at a number of points in the story the action became so confusing that I was unable to picture what the characters were doing.
crazy mashine
Spies, Nazis, murder, double agents and an impenetrable fortress are just a portion of what you will encounter in one of the best page turners in history, Alistair MacLean's Where Eagles Dare. Captain Smith and lieutenant Scaffer and 5 other British and American agents must parachute into the frozen, frigid and treacherous German alps in the midst of World War II. Next, they break in to the German secret intelligent headquarters, only accessible by a air gondola, all for what seems to be to rescue one of general, but turns out to be much, much more. As their mission progresses Schaffer begins to suspect the presence of a double agent as the enemies always seems to know their next move and the agents slowly began to die out. Where Eagles Dare is a must read for anyone who calls himself an action reader and suspense lover.

I am not kidding when I say Where Eagles Dare is the king of suspense novels and is literally impossible to put down. Every chapter leaves you and the characters hanging from cliff- tops, gondolas and sometimes for their lives. I have read many books that are suspenseful such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Alex Rider, and Ranger's Apprentice, and none of them even come close.

Warning to girls and the weak of heart: This book may not be for you, but will fore sure lure the average teen boy with the novel's catastrophic explosions, bullet wounds, stab marks and bodies. Every one of these factors also leads to the book not having even one single dull moment. So if you enjoy being reading thrilling books, then Where Eagles Dare is the perfect choice for you

One of the great things that separates Where Eagles Dare from most action and suspense novels is that although the book is bloody, the author (through the sensitivity displayed by the characters) does show a little more courtesy to human life than most action books now a days. For example, at one point in the book, Captain Smith goes back, at risk to his own life, to untie the German radio officer they earlier ambushed to give him a chance to escape before the place blew up.

This historic action packed and suspenseful page-turners appeals to not only to teens but to adults too. For instance, my dad and I agree that it is one of, if not the, best book of all time. So if you read this 5 star book and do not enjoy it, then do yourself a favor and GET TO A DOCTOR!

Where eagles dare is a non-stop thrill ride where no one is who they seem to be and everyone has a hidden agenda. It is set in the days just prior to operation Overlord (invasion of Normandy) and follows Major Smith, a British intelligence officer as he infiltrates a Nazi stronghold deep behind enemy lines. The story will keep you guessing who the good guys are between hair raising action sequences. Give it a try!
GoodLike
I've read this book 3 or 4 times now. Great for relaxed, quick, uncomplicated read. The movie was good as well. I liked it when movies followed the books more closely. Anyway, this is vintage MacLean with action, a few twists, tension and humor. Not much character developement but that's to be expected with a fairly short work.

I've seen this movie starring Clint Eastwood many, many years ago. When I saw the story available as an e-Book, I instantly swept it to my Kindle. The story is about freeing a U.S. general during World War II from an Alpine fortress. There is a lot of deception, action and challenges for the rescue team. This is a great story to read. There is also lots of humorous dialogue I didn't expect. Highly recommend.
Typical Alistair MacLean read, very easy to read. He has a very descriptive way of writing that gives a clear picture of the people and events that takes place during his story telling. If your are expecting the story line in the book vs the movie, lets just say that the screen writers took a lot of liberties with the story line. If your a fan of A.M., you will enjoy it.
