This is a useful book containing many experiments and demonstrations to help students understand science. Some problems include the claim that early life on earth was "simple" (page 54). Trilobites and other early life forms were not simple but had many very complex structures, such as their eyes, a topic that much has been written about. Neither are one celled life forms simple, as any beginning biology student learns. Another problem is many of the color illustrations show animals aggressively and viciously after weaker and smaller life forms to illustrate nature red tooth in claw, a phrase commonly ascribed to Tennyson, that is widely used to describe the Darwinian claim of the ruthless way that Nature daily dispenses with individuals and species. In fact, as many studies have shown, the vast majority of time most of nature is at peace with each other in the world, quite in contrast to humans. Examples in the book include pp. 160a; 200a; 200b; 224a; 224b. Another problem is the progression of man from ape to modern human illustration (p. 278), a drawing correctly condemned by none other than Stephen Jay Gould, the man this book is dedicated to on page iv!

It was more beat up than I thought. Wouldn't recommend this buyer again, false advertising in my opinion. Came with some obvious wear and tear which is fine, if that is what you are expecting!

I love this teaching unit for introducing my sixth grade students to the concept of evolution. They are actively engaged in investigating evidence and developing formative ideas about how life has changed through geologic time. By investigating five time periods and their geologic features and determining the characteristics and adaptations of the organisms that thrived during those eras helps students to see how geology impacts biology. It's a great unit that is worth the prep time involved!
