Wagner (the TV star) and Spade have raised their families on a strict meatless diet with no dairy products, eggs, or sugar. Their recipes are designed for both the converted and for those who still crave meat: Italian Sausage and Peppers (with sausages made from tofu) and Teriyaki Tofu ("reminiscent of chicken"). The dishes that aren't trying to imitate other flavors-Pasta with Avocado Pesto-seem more appealing.

This title popped up in the review of a recently published cookbook. Although this one has been around for years, it's a wonderful resource with great recipes for a variety of dishes. (The book has over 200 recipes and I marked over 70 I'm eager to try.)

The seasoning is basic rather than exotic. When you buy the book you're going to have a wealth of GOOD recipes you'll enjoy prepared as printed in the book. And, if you have a knack for adding other seasonings to finetune the recipes, you're going to have a wealth of really GREAT recipes.

The recipes are vegetarian, use minimal fat and dairy products, and are designed to suit many tastes (from meat-and-potato eaters who are game to try some meals without meat, to occasional vegetarians, all the way to strict vegetarians). The measurements and directions are clear and easy enough even for those just learning to cook.

One of my favorite recipes so far is a quick vegetable soup which uses tahini and soy sauce to form the broth. It's a tasty, easy, economical alternative to using a packaged broth, and is an idea one I've never seen anywhere else.

The recipes look so good I wound up buying a second copy to pass onto a young friend just starting to cook. When I described some of the recipes to the girl's mother, she said she'd like to use it herself, too.

The book does not include nutritional analysis for the dishes. If it had, I would have given it 5 rather than 4 stars.

You're sure to find many dishes you'll enjoy making and eating. The book is worth buying at the cover price. A plus is that since this was published years ago, the book is available for little more than the shipping price!

First, Thank You Amazon for your speedy delivery. I had this book in 3 days.
I purchased this book not to become a vegetarian but to learn to cook healthier foods. I must say that after reading and trying the recipes Lyndsay and Ariane did a wonderful job. This book actually informs the reader on the health benefits of a more natural diet using whole grains and more fruits and vegetables. They do not say you have to be a vegetarian they just give you information and guidelines for a healthier lifestyle.
If anyone has tried Vegetarian cookbooks before (as I have), and thrown them out because they were complicated with ingredients you can't find, try this book, I had almost everything in my kitchen already, there are no funky things to go out and find, and my sons (9 and 11) have decided they like soy milk better than regular milk. Best book I have ever purchase. Thanks goes to Lyndsay and Ariane.

Overall, this is a great book with good vegetarian (most of them vegan) recipes. I am not vegan or vegetarian but we usually have one or two meat-less days a week and I got this book for more veggie options. The black bean & greek olive pate (vegan tapenade), falafel, pecan herb loaf, prune spread and zucchini lasagna recipes (among others) were really good but the tempeh or tofu marinade, for example, didn't quite work for us. Unfortunately, this book was written when fats (even the good ones) were considered public enemy number 1, and I found myself replacing some of the ingredients and fat substitutes for the real thing. Get this book if you are a vegan or a vegetarian who's willing to do a little tweaking to bring it into the 21st century.

I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, since I just received the book, but I'll definitely be making some of these. A tasty collection! (Seller accurately described the book, and delivered on time. Would use this seller again.)

I was given this book several years ago, but, resulting from several moves, I lost it on the way. I finally got around to ordering it to, again, enjoy the California influenced recipes that are contained. It is a welcome re-addition to my humble collection of recipe books.

Most of this was revolutionary back in its day, but now not so much. For instance the eating soy, and gluten aspect. Soy in this country is garbage. GMOs and gluten are the new things to avoid. The recipes are interesting, but many of them had soy or gluten, so I couldn't eat them. If you can, get this book for its interesting recipes. And remember, these gals wrote about it first.

The recipes are good and they are relatively easy to make I would definitely try this is you are into a healthy diet
This book has certainly stood the test of time! The recipes are easy to follow and taste good. Love the Pecan burgers!
