Thy Word is Truth (1957). In the Beginning: Genesis 1-3 and the Authority of Scripture.

It is precisely because it lies at the heart of Christianity. While it is said that only what we think of Christ really matters, Professor Young urges us to recognize that what we think of him inevitably depends on the reliability of the Bible. If it fails us, we can know nothing for certain about Christ. He has chosen to make himself known through Scripture. To write such a book as this demands special gifts, and a rare combination of qualifications. E.J. Young possessed these to an unusual degree. He was an outstanding linguist and biblical scholar, and knew the text of the Bible intimately. He understood the doctrinal issues which are at stake. He possessed a lucid mind and pen. He was also willing to rest his own soul on the convictions to which Scripture itself drove him-even when this involved swimming against the tide of the world of scholarship in which he moved with high distinction. His blend of true scholarship with humble commitment to Christ makes this study a reliable introduction to a question which continues to haunt the church at the beginning of the 21st century.

Thy Word is Truth is a great book for anyone looking to understand the importance of inerrancy, as well as defend the Bible as a source of truth. It starts by going through the Bible's stance on itself, and then interacting with many modern biblical-critical scholars' ideas. Some people might flippantly disregard the biblical passages concerning Scripture on the basis that to do so is circular, but they fail to realize that any ultimate authority will operate on some sort of circular model. (Whether it's viciously circular depends on the case.) Anyhow, it's a great book that I would certainly recommend to anyone dealing with challenges to inerrancy.

... but all you get is an errant copy. Sorry. Brother Young (and I am being charitable) trots out the relatively recent shibboleth: "Only the Original Text Is Inerrant" in this warm and fuzzy presbyterian, KJV-quoting 274 page, indexed book. If you are a good scholar like Princeton men A.A. Hodge, B.B. Warfield, and a Westminster man like E.J. Young, you 'get' this, tho it is supposedly written "down" to the "layman" (poor us!). Young treats the ORIGINAL copies penned by the OT and NT men as ''inerrant''. As if. As if the Mss were all at one time put together in their first, as-dictated form (PLEASE! see jeremiah 36?) As if Christ had no inerrant copies. As if the Apostle Paul had no inerrant copies. As if I have no inerrant copy. As if God did not superintend "the men of Hezekiah" in Proverbs 25 when THEY made 'copies' ... The so called "Doctrine of the Inerrant Original", as Young puts it (p. 89 in my Banner of Truth 'copy', 1997 printing) has been relegated by 'modern theologians' into 'the limbo of the unimportant'; while, all the time professing his love for God and his Holy Word, Young is writing out of both sides of his pen! There is really nothing to compare this book to. All moderns seem obsessed with crushing the true verbal inspiration of Scripture to the point that we need scholars to determine "Yea, hath God said ... ?" Sorry, I would not buy this, but you can have my 'copy', as annotated, for postage.
