Jonathan David Larson (February 4, 1960 – January 25, 1996) was an American composer and playwright noted for exploring the social issues of multiculturalism, addiction, and homophobia in his work. Boom! He received three posthumous Tony Awards and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the rock musical Rent.

The book gives the history behind Rent and what it meant to Jonathan Larson and his friends. It was so sad that he died before he could see how well received it has become. There is the full libretto of the entire play and the biographies of all people featured in the play. I’m still reading it but so far it’s pretty awesome to have especially if your a fan of Rent.

Jonathan Larson:Rent (1996).

Jonathan Larson wrote Rent. Lots of people know that. Larson wrote about 200 songs over 18 years, starting when he was in college. That’s about to change. They were for unproduced musicals, workshops and benefits; there were pop songs, political songs, and songs cut from his two posthumously produced musicals, Rent and Tick, Tic. oom! Many are about being a struggling artist in New York.

Those words can be attributed to Rent creator Jonathan Larson, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the musical back in the early 1990s .

Those words can be attributed to Rent creator Jonathan Larson, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the musical back in the early 1990s, long before Fox decided to put on a live rendition of Rent. But his history with the musical that would make his name synonymous with theater is also a tragic one. The rock opera started performances off-Broadway in early 1996, and it was so popular that it quickly moved to Broadway on April 26th, 1996. Sadly, though Larson’s music and words have touched millions all over the world, he never actually got to see them up on stage.

In these pages, Rent offers what most theater books can't: a chance to step behind the curtain and feel the electricity of a stage phenomenon as it unfolds.

Rent has single-handedly reinvigorated Broadway and taken America by storm. Sweeping all major theater awards, including the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for drama, as well as four 1996 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score for a Musical, Rent captures the heart and spirit of a generation, refleting it onstage through the emotion of its stirring words and music, and the energy of its young cast. Now, for the first time, Rent comes to life on the page -- through vivid color photographs, the full libretto, and an utterly compelling behind-the-scenes oral history of the show's creation. Here is the exclusive and absolutely complete companion to Rent, told in the voices of the extraordinary talent behind its success: the actors, the director, the producers, and the librettist and composer himself, Jonathan Larson, whose sudden death, on the eve of the first performance, has made Rent's life-affirming message all the more poignant.

This book is essential for any RENThead. It includes lots of background information on how Jonathan created the show, many colorful pictures of the Original Broadway Cast, and the full libretto. Overall, a very worthwhile investment if you are a fan of Rent. Bare in mind that the book was published in 1997, so the cast biographies in the back do not include some of the cast's post-Rent achievements that boosted them to major stardom (e.g. Idina Menzel and "Wicked").

This book is the perfect book for fans of the show and the perfect coffee table book... I simply love reading it and looking at the pictures. The book features information on how the show came about, it's sucess, and the life of Jonathon Larson(it's creator) struggle to have his show made on Broadway. Larson tragically died before opening night due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Truly it's a shame he did not live to see the dream of his creation realized.

In the book the orginal cast members talk a little bit about Larson and the musical's affect on them. The most interesting part of the story is reading about the orginal cast's sucess... all of the orginal cast sucess has become EXTREMELY sucessful. The musical being their break to stardom. The actors & actresses talk about the affect the musical has on their everyday lives.

The musical features little known facts about the show, the cast, and insight onto what made the musical one of the longest running musicals in history.

The book is truly the RentHead bible and perfect for the fan of musicals...

I have wanted to see Rent on Broadway since it came out 10 years ago, but never got to. I was thrilled to have it made into a movie. I saw it in the theater twice in a couple days, & preordered the DVD. I waited anxiously for it to arrive.

This movie is so wonderful, & right away became my favorite movie of all time. It is life affirming. The overall themes are living life to the fullest in the face of poverty & impending death, friends forming a family that takes care of one another, & celebrating life. I cried through most of it.

The music is incredible, beautiful songs & amazing harmonies. I have listened to the cd so much since I got it 3 months ago, I may just wear it out!

I loved all the characters, thought they all did a great job. I especially like the story of Tracie Thoms, going from Rent Head fan to starring as Joanne in the movie. She has an incredible voice. Wilson Jermaine Heridia was unforgettable as Angel. I've liked Jesse L Martin on Law & Order, but seeing him as Collins made me totally nuts for him. That man can sing & be sexy as a gay man, even to a straight woman!

Buy this movie & the cd, you won't be disappointed.
