In this rich and deceptively simple book, beloved writer Henri Nouwen speaks-from the heart and from his own experience-of the joys and challenges of religious service. Nouwen, now of the Yale Divinity School, has . The table of contents and preface put forth a structure and a topic-the task of the professional minister as remembrance of Jesus Christ-and leave the author free to say what is on his mind.

Nouwen, now of the Yale Divinity School, has assimilated the insights of the behavioral sciences and caring professions, and this, with his strong pastoral intent, lies behind what he says. Even in this short book, he stands far above the mediocrity of most current religious writing.

I am a very seasoned Lutheran Pastor; I found this book about 20 years ago in a little bookstore by Marquette University in Milwaukee. I read it on the airplane flight returning home (at the time) to Tucson. It was such a profound read and it "hit" me in so many places where I was struggling. I vowed to read this book every year I was in the ministry and have kept that vow! Now I buy the book in bulk and give them away to other pastors and priests who struggle with issues of identity, role, "efficiency" and other performance sins of the ministry.

Ministry is truly not about doing; rather it is about being. The problem is that no one knows how to evaluate a "be-er" like you can a "do-er", and so there is confusion. What should the Pastor be "doing"? Wrong question! A better question is "how can I help my Pastor "be" the Pastor he needs to be?

While this book is primarily for Pastors, lay members of any Church community can benefit from this brief read!

This is a great book at maybe at a middle school reading level. The author makes some interesting points. Its a little dry in parts, but I'm sure that perspective varies from person to person. The postage used to send it was not trackable. It did take me over 3 weeks to recieve it, which is a bit much even for it coming from the other side of the country. It is a great price, so if you don't mind waiting and you don't need it for a class, i highly recommend it.

I read this when I was on the plane from Los Angeles to Costa Rica. It was so captivating that I finished reading it in one sitting. Definitely, a must read.

great
I recently attended a Formational Counseling seminar at Ashland Theological Seminary. The director of the institute; Terry Wardle...said that he thought this was Nouwen's best book. Sooo...naturally i took that to heart...
Though i have not read all of Nouwen's books. I must say...it is short & sweet...a marvelous distillation and concentration of spiritual honey that i will savor for years to come.
