This may have been the most poorly written biography I have encountered in many years. Almost every paragraph is interrupted with personal conjectures or reminiscences as if the writer is conducting a rambling, fireside conversation rather than coherently tracing the lifestyle of one of England's most remarkable artist-writers. Compounding the problem is the absence of illustrations; hence his commentary about Lear's paintings continually comes across as unsubstantiated and somewhat uninformed opinion.

I don't understand the one-star rating. After the introduction, where one tends to welcome the personal from almost any author, I do not find
evidence that Levi intrudes on the narrative at all, much less in almost every paragraph. As for Levi on the paintings, take this small example: "Some of the Upper Egyptian paintings in particular do convey an extraordinary calm, both of place and of spirit, as if they were by Corot. Nothing is more striking in them than their stillness." (p. 169). In a monograph, there would of course be the color plates that the reviewer misses, and much more detail, but there would not be better writing than this. Levi has written a sympathetic and highly readable biography.
