Chintz (from the plural of chint) was originally glazed calico textiles, initially specifically those imported from India, printed with designs featuring flowers and other patterns in different colours, typically on a light plain background. Since the 19th century the term has also been used for the style of floral decoration developed in those calico textiles, but then used more widely, for example on chintzware pottery and wallpaper

Описание: This book explores the contemporary art of India in a volume as colorful, vibrant, and diverse as the country itself. Описание: Explores the background and development of the technique of chintz.

Over the past hundred years, “chintz” has come to mean any floral printed furnishing fabric, usually made of cotton, and often glazed. Its origins as a hand-drawn and dyed fabric from India are often forgotten, but it is with these rare earlier chintzes that this book is concerned. This stunning album explores in detail the background and development of this beautiful technique and looks at the use of chintz in Europe from the early seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, first as bed curtains and wall hangings and later for popular men’s and women’s fashions. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection, published for the first time in glorious color and including close-up details, will interest interior designers, textile students, and those involved in fashion.

Could have been a glorious book but let down by the colour reproductions.I have seen many of these fabrics and quilts and the book does not do them justice.

This catalogue of the Indian painted and resist-dyed cotton textiles from the V&A collection is a great source of basic factual information about these wonderful fabrics made for export to Europe and South-East Asia. Moreover, it is accompanied by a wealth of beautiful images containing wonderful overall views of fabrics as well as detailed images of individual pieces. For easy reference, all images have short captions whose more detailed versions are represented by the catalogue entries preceding the illustrated section of the catalogue.

I love textiles. I love Indian patterns. I love paisley and chintz (in the older definition--not all chintz is glazed!). This book is full of photos and has great info. Beautifully done.
