I first read this book in very early elementary school (perhaps 1st grade) in the 1960s, and I was pleased to buy this. Recently I read it to my daughters (now 20 and 17), and they enjoyed the simple story and illustrations and that they too would have loved the book when they were little kids. This is not a rollicking fun read in the vein of something like Dr. Seuss' "Fox in Sox," and is instead a more charming, gentle read in the vein of "Goodnight Moon."

My 2 1/2 year old rough and tumble boy loves this book. It is such a gentle book (for him), I never thought he'd settle down and listen to it, but he does 100% of the time. Of course I always make the stair CREEEEAK, the door SQUEEEEAK, the big door GROOOOAN, and the big stair MOOOOANNNN, but he also seems to really relate to everything in the book. The context is just perfect for his age. Well before he (& his friends) learned the words for other things, they knew what a door was, time for bed, stairs, cats, barns, and even owls. And the pacing is perfect, gently lulling while the action changes. Love it, love it, love it. Can't wait to get the new copy & retire the one that belonged to my mother. (It got pretty roughed up during my sister & my childhood, when we loved it a little too hard)

My two sons loved this gentle and sweet story when they were small. I loved it too and we used to have a copy that was much-loved and well-read. It got lost in one of our numerous moves and I did so want to have at least one copy. I was thrilled to find it here on Amazon. It's a great read and non-scary and so sweet and fun. It sits proudly on my bookshelf along my grownup books. And I still read it now and then. My sons were happy to see it too and enjoyed reading it and sharing their memories of our times with this lovely book. Hooray for the internet and Amazon!

Such a sweet, lovely story. These were some of my favorites growing up and I am on a mission to read all the books of my childhood all over again. Revisiting Georgie has been a wonderful trip. I plan to read all the other books as I find them. Gus the ghost is on my list as well. I suggest you give these books a read for your kids, grandkids or even yourself.

Loved the story as a child. Sharing it as a grandmother
this halloween story about Georgie and how he scares the robbers and gets the furniture back in the house, Of course he gets a little help from Hermie the cat and Oliver the Ghost. Your never too small to help out. Also great to talk about cooperation. The book also refers to the value of antiques, which is an unussual topic to find in a children's story.
