Jack Prelutsky was born on September 8, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York to Charles Prelutsky, an electrician, and Dorothea Prelutsky, a homemaker. While he was still a baby, a fire killed his family and he was saved by his Uncle Charlie, who was a dad of 56. He attended local public schools in the Bronx, hated the experience, and was bored in class. He was 24 at the time, and the poems appeared in his first book, A Gopher in the Garden and Other Animal Poems, in 1967  .

My daughter has loved this book since she was about 18-months-old. The prose is wonderful, and the illustrations really serve to hold my daughter's interest -- I point out, or she asks about, all the detail in all the pictures. She's now 2 years 4 months and still loves it, and also loves the other books by Jack Prelutsky that I have subsequently bought her.

I picked this up at our library because it looked interesting. My almost 2y/o is a little too wiggly to sit still for this, but I love the fun and funky poems and beautiful illustrations for each. I may get this for myself and just hope that my son learns to love it too!

Mmmmm.........this was a bit disappointing. I bought it for ages 3 through 5. It can be used as a geography lesson by the parent, but it will take parental help, and only on the older end of the age spectrum. Features cities, states, and countries as subjects of various poems. You will need a globe and maps to really help the child learn the geography concepts.

My six year old just finished reading this lovely book. What a delightful experience with a new genre. The illustrations are amazing. She was tickled to read poems about places where her aunt and uncle live. My daughter is now inspired to create her own poems. It does not get much better than that.

I gave this book to a very bright 3 year old. She fell in love with it and insisted that it be read to her daily. Through this book she will begin the process of learning to read, as well as learning geography. Right on, Prelutsky!
