This book is terrible.

I'm a big fan of horses (I own two) and I used to compete on the A-circuit quite a bit, though not at the level of the girls in this book. I'm glad I have that background, else I wouldn't understand half of this book. If you don't know a lot of equestrian vernacular, this book will be VERY confusing for you!

The characters in this book are all over the top and unredeemed at the end.

Kate is probably my favorite, as she is the most down to earth of the three female leads. She's the poor girl who has to work her butt off for a chance to ride some nice horses in big shows.

Fitz is the guy rider who is a player. He has a thing for Kate, but she is scared to get involved with him because of his reputation.

Tommi is just kind of there. She's super rich, has lots of expensive horses, doesn't have a great relationship with her family, and is kind of boring.

Zara is terrible. She is absolutely terrible. I could deal with the horrible attitude if she learned something by the end... but she doesn't! At the end (SPOILER ALERT) she is drunk, takes someone else's horse out, starts jumping huge fences with it, and seriously injures it to the point where it probably can never compete again (and could have to be put to sleep). At this point, Zara has been a completely idiotic rude witch for the entire novel and this incident is the icing on the cake.

HOWEVER

She doesn't get in trouble. She suffers NO consequences for her bad behavior. Ever.

Instead, FITZ volunteers to take the fall for Zara's COMPLETELY AWFUL behavior that RUINED someone else's EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE horse (these types of show horses are valued at tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars). Him volunteering to get in trouble for this is supposedly a way to prove to Kate that he's serious about their relationship. This makes NO sense at all. NONE! NONE NONE NONE!

And Zara gets away with a completely heinous crime against a horse (and that horse's owner).

THE END!

What? What???

The horse trainer put up with Zara's bad behavior for the entire novel, despite her disrupting everything in his barn. Everyone basically puts up with it, and when she finally spins out of control enough to really cause some serious damage and you think she's FINALLY going to turn things around... someone else takes the fall for her and she gets away with it again. And continues acting horrible.

Absolutely terrible terrible awful awful book! Do not pay money for this garbage

If you love horses, do not read this book. It is not about horses or the love of riding. It is about a bunch of whiny, rich A-Circuit riders who don't give a damn about horses yet somehow still pin at the top. To all the reviewers that have been saying that it is right on the money in its portrayal of the A-Circuit, I would argue that, no matter how expensive your horse is, thousands of hours of training are still involved to pin at those shows. So if you don't love riding horses, you are not going to be an equestrian. There are much easier things to do to gain attention in high society, such as attending elite events and joining elite clubs. Riding horses well takes diligence, perseverance, and a lot of hard work. Even at "full service" barns like this most people aren't just handed their horses, ready to go. They still spend time with their horses, groom their horses, tack their horses--it's part of being an equestrian. If you never tacked or groomed a horse in your life and on show day your mount's saddle slipped back just before you went into the arena, it's gonna be pretty embarrassing if you can't undo the girth and move the dang saddle forward. Horse people love horses. That's why they ride. Otherwise they would lay on a beach or zoom around on a motorcycle or jump out of an airplane for kicks. Not spend hours of sweat perfecting the very difficult art of riding. This book is perfect for someone who wants drama just like "Gossip Girls" but totally wrong for people who love horses. The riders in this book don't give a crap about their mounts, not even the token "poor girl" who works oh so hard at the Big Awesome Show Barn for the generous gift of being allowed to ride there. Please. A horse breaks its leg--who cares? Oh well! The author even goes so far as to insult the schooling barns where 99% of people ride in a later book (which I only read to see if maybe they got better--I am desperate for good horse books) having the characters call them "up-down barns" and implying that no one who rides anywhere short of a $2000 a month training facility can sit the trot, much less ride well. And that, put simply, is a joke. There are many, many riders who ride at smaller facilities who are good enough for the A-Circuit but can't afford a mount that would make the cut or can't afford the enormous entry fees. Only a tiny percentage of riders train at barns as uppity as this one. There is a barn near me owned by a former Olympic medalist. No, his lessons aren't cheap, and neither is board, but your horsie don't come all tacked up and ready to go. You, as a rider, are expected to be responsible for your horse. The horses in these books might as well be bicycles--that is how much personality the author gives them and how much respect the riders have for them. Like horses at all? Skip these books.

Will Kate get a HEA for now with Fitz ? Can Tommi prove to her father that she can make a business out of loving horses and her passions ?
